that is right, bara... when i am sick and cannot go to work, why shouldn't i spend more time on sl? as long as it does not worsen my sickness, it is ok. same refers to handicapped people ecc which i know, too.

but those i meant are neither sick (at least not physically, maybe SL-addicted!), nor handicapped ...

@aphris: i now such people, too! in sl all day long ... and wonder how they can afford it financially...

Many are house wifes. Their husbands afford it. Others live of state welfare (alone in my city of 100.000 we have 3000 people who can work but simply refuse to do anything - they get money from the state, not much, but enough to live reasonable).

that leaves 3 1/2 hours an evening.  Even to spend all that time in SL seems to me to be a bit unhealthy.

I'd agree that doing the same thing with your spare time every day could be considered rather dull, but let's not forget that people are creatures of habit, and most people will do the same thing every day after work. If that thing were watching TV or knitting or completing puzzles, nobody would bat an eyelid about how 'healthy' it was.

@tertionis: well, I'd do, I'd bat my eyelid... as I know that many of these guys are not only in sl but in various other virtual worlds.

And?

What business is it of yours what other people do in their spare time?

And how do you know how much time people are spending online and how many different worlds they're inhabiting unless you're doing the same?

I quite unashamedly spend a fair proportion of my evenings in world, i go to work full time, i keep house, i have no children to tend too and i have never turned down a RL event or invitation in order to remain home and log in..

Tertionus is perfectly correct, people are creatures of habit and when i come home from 9 hours at work, turning around and heading back out again, especially in these cold days, is usually the last thing i want to, socialising in the real world is generally reserved for my days off when i have the energy and get up and go, to well.. get up and go.. There are some nights i just want to eat, have a nice long bath and curl up with a good book or movie then crawl into bed ready for the next day and so, i do just that, but really i am not ashamed of the fact that i choose to spend my 4 or 5 hours of evening relaxing time in front of the computer screen interacting with a rich and varied range of people who challenge my mind and keep my writing skills sharp, instead of sitting about watching the TV.

As for the OP. Anyone, regardless of role, should, if time permits, make those they are in a scene with aware if they are about to leave, not always possible, we all know that and we all sometimes just hit the red x, but when it is possible, it is just good manners and common courtesy..
should a slave rp'er specifically ask permission ooc to leave? well thats a very personal thing between two players, if BOTH are happy with that arrangement, then thats their deal.
It's when one isn't happy with it, or feels wrongly forced into such a move, that the problems begin but then, to me, that would indicate the pairing was flawed from the get go and both were seeking different things out of the game.

it is not necessary to be inworld. there are lots of means you can find it from "outside" ... but i am really wondering that it is especially those people, who are always on, and do not know of this.

and i am not only talking of google... nowadays it is so easy to find on the web whatever you are looking for, and it is fare more difficult to hide!

have a nice day, anyway...  Smiley

Alright..since we are goin on down the road Ill take 2 and add a derail of my own here..

I work upwards of 60 hours a week doing a seriously stressful job.. those who know me ooc know this.. Bottom line.. when I have time to have fun.. I do it.. some of my fun includes role playing in a Sci-Fi fantasy world online.. and ya know what.. it makes me happy..and I have FUN.. bottom line if I wanna spend time role playing because I enjoy it.. I'm gonna do it.. I don't rely on SL for a social life..got one a them all on my own like a big boy.. but when I want to have fun hanging out and pretending to be a giant man from another world.. shrugs.. who cares as long as I KNOW its make believe..

Back to the OP.. if you have to go.. just go.. don't be so worried about all the other shit.. an emergency is an emergency.. if someone you are role playing with has a problem with that.. tell them to find something a little more important to be pissy about for fuck sake..

and for those of you who get pissy cause someone didn't toss out a quick "gotta go".. all I can say is remember what is really worth getting your panties in a bind over please.. cause that.. sure as hell aint it..

Ummmm... not quite sure what you're getting so worked up about.  No one, absolutely no one, is talking about the majority of people who have a normal, sane and rich private life and choose to spend some of their hours in SL.  What we are advising against, is for people to spend all their free time in SL.  Like anything else done to excess, whether it be drinking, knitting or placing endless posts about why BtB sucks and GE is the best, it may  lead to (or be) an unhealthy obsession or addiction.

Now, getting  back to the OP, no one should have to ask for OOC permission to leave.  Period.  As far as announcing in the middle of a RP that you have to leave or finding a way to leave IC as opposed to just poofing....

Someone who suddenly poofs without an annoucement because of an emergency I can understand and have no problem with.  Someone who consistently and contiinually just poofs without any notice.... is probably not someone I would want to RP with often.

I totally agree here. Asking if one can go offline - or afk in that matter - I dislike it, really, it is an unneeded "yes", and an unneeded eventual force into a responsibility I do not want in a game. Force? Means: if I say "Yes, sure, no question", do I eventually enrage her OOC owner who has other plans or wants the exclusive right to reply, despite not having been asked exclusively, and may taint my day after with huge drama? Selfexplaining I guess. I told my slaves, whenever I had them, to not ask me, but to tell me if there is something with RL they need to tend to. I respect the players of slaves as equal to me in RL, they are not below myself in value and rights. They have an issue, they can tell they have to leave (not even necessarily why) and leave.

But, I respect the players of slaves as equal to me in RL, they are neither above me in value and rights. That makes me demand a brief notice, at least a public little line like ((...)) so that I know that this line of RP is over, that I do not wait for them to return after a crash. It is just a sign of maners, respect, to inform the ones that play with you, to acknowledge them as not only pixle piles but real living humen such as yourself. In a bar, on a party, at work, in my family or amongst my friends, I would expect no less. Imagine you talk with someone and they just stand up and leave, without anything, that is rude!

Emergencies? Yes that can happen, it can happen that one's uncle died, the cat vomits on the printer, a child fell down the stairs. Aside of real crittical things though that means to safe a life, there IS - ALWAYS - time for a brief notice of the humen you are with. If the child fell: GO! But if your cat vomits, your dog needs to pee (or peed already), your uncle died, give a brief "RL sry))" and poof, do not TP elsewhere, do not seek to explain something to your OOC owner. I will see in the briefness of that line that sh** has hit the fan really, for else you could have typed a bit more.

At times though I wonder what kind of people play SL, there are so unholy many emergencies, so many mothers that had died, so many sick children, so many neighbour biting dogs, so many RL raped girls, so many financial issues one has to suddenly stand up and care for, so many suddenly appearing friends, police officers, mothers, burglars, rapists, boyfriends, girlfriends, phone calls that tell about highly important tasks at the job that one has to log 2 seconds ago to start the 30 minutes drive to office, that tell about sick relatives or vomitting cats. Are so many of us really living a nightmare or even a hell of a life that they cannot even say "I am sorry, something came up, I need to go" (took me 3 seconds) to a RL person they spent with the last 30 to 240 minutes being with...
