I am fairly sure I know the answer to this, however, I wished to ask a wider audience.

Here is this situation:

There is a Free Woman, who is not ((nor has evern been i believe)) companioned.  She holds some sort of role in the red caste.  I'm not entirely sure what.  She has recently become pregnant.  Now, my question is....and I'm sure this has been asked before but for my own clarification.... What would be the action, if any, that would be taken against this woman.

I am of the understanding that a number of things "should/could" happen.  Everything from possible enslavement, Rape prosecution of the Man who is the father, so on and so on.  I think my true question is would it be "odd" to turn a blind eye to this, as in, nothing to happen to her at all.  No questions, no inquisition.  I am curious about what the response may be because I was under the impression SOMETHING would happen.  So sort of steps against her or the Man that did it.  Am I wrong?  Should I just sort of think "Oh that's nice" and keep walking?

Thats up to her family, her father or brothers and would i be one of them, i would question it and for the first her intelligence. The rest of Gor wouldn't bother as there wouldn't be a reason to step into such a personal matter.

I don't remember where it was, but I remember somewhere a really nice RP sequence about a FW in a similar situation, who was keeping it a secret from everyone except one of the (female) greens.  It was really nice, as she let us all know by emoting her fear of being found out, so we all would ask suspicious type of questions about how she was gaining weight, or not noticing.  In later stages, she wore ever bigger RoC's.  Something happened, though, and I missed the ending.  But there's a lot you can do with it, depending on how she plays it.

It can be nice RP when the rest of her caste starts to wrinkle their noses or such  Grin

When I role played on Ven on the Vosk years ago there was a lady that was well and truly raped by some one ( rp of course) with out her consent or planing. She decided though to come out of the deal knocked up. My alt was a physician at the time and I was the one she turned to when she suspected and I was the one to tell her she was. I went though the whole role play with her up to and including the birthing. During this time she put up a tiny house away from the city ( she knew the sim owner rather well ) and role played hiding out there when she got to big to hide it any more. She was under the impression that a unaccompanied woman with child would be enslaved. I've never seen proof of that before. But it is not the last time I saw it. While in the same city, but after I started playing Kail, one of the cities warriors was killed. His companion was with child during this event. One of our....less honorable members pointed out this thought again. He was not around for the other role play so the idea did not come from the same source. Unless the source is the books any how. He held it though and started making threats to collar the now uncompanied woman. It was only a threat though because when I promised his nuts in a sack back for his trouble he backed off. It is not the last time I saw this thinking. I have also seen some examples of woman with child and no companion. So I am utterly lost on this one. I tend to just let my morals guide me on it. If she got child by sleeping around like a slut I would go to lengths to see her in a collar. If by rape or death of companion I stand first in the line of those that would defend her freedom. Until some one can show me a direct quote that is not convoluted or confusing I will continue to act that way.

I What would be the action, if any, that would be taken against this woman.

Whatever your character wants to roleplay.
You see, you have to be the catalyst on that roleplay. Someone has to take an interest in the situation and bring it to others notice, and then have it go from there. letting other characters make their decisions of what to do. Everyone will have their own idea of what should be done.
If you're not interested in doing any roleplay , then turning a blind eye is the standard routine.

Always an interesting question and one I remember being discussed some time ago but I'm glad you brought it up!

When Shyla was still playing a FW and a physician in training, she was companioned, had a toddler and was expecting her second child.  Both pregnancies were within the confines of the relationship and with the same partner.  Not long into her second pregnancy, her companion went missing.  She was terrified IC and went to make arrangements to "cover" her condition and circumstance.  Long story short, she obtained permission from her guardian to travel far, far away to birth the child.  She did so and returned to Treve later to finish her training.  Little side note: she left the children with others while making her way back to Treve.  No one was wiser.   Well, until she tried to collect some of her things and almost died at the hands of a Trevian warrior!  OMG ... scary stuff.

The whole story was very involved and it took two months to play out and I felt it was very realistic for my character.  And in the end, Shyla HAD to leave Treve and seek refuge (sort of hiding IC and doing another line of work ... played a seamstress) due to the circumstance surrounding her missing companion and two fatherless children.

*sighs with a smile*  It was a fantastic plot for me personally and I really enjoyed playing out everything: the companionship, the INDIVIDUAL births of the required two children for a female physician and all the stuff after.  Good times.

So, bunni ... I guess I said all of this to make a point.  The role play can take a million twists and turns if everyone is willing to have some fun with the story.  BUT I feel (IMHO) that the pregnant woman has the control on how and what she will rp.  It is her IC body and no one has to know ... unless she wants them to.  Could be LOTS of fun and a memorable story.

It was for me.

I've done the secret pregnancy. Let me tell you... it is HARD. You do everything necessary so people do not find out. It got to the point that I disappeared from the city I was at once a few people discovered it. But what was asked is what happens to this unfortunate woman? Well depending on how vocal she is, she can hide it pretty well. Also depending on if in secret she can secure a Companion.

In reading the posts after mine, it again would seem that the over all thinking is that it must be hidden. That a woman with child and with out companion has some thing to fear. I would ask though. Is this right? Are there any passages in the books that suggest or out right say that a woman with child and no companion is collared. I would like to see quotes that say as much. Even though I my self on an alt took part in one of these hidden births, by the end when she finally gave birth she was companioned, and I have to wonder now if it was some thing she got from the books or is it just our own deep rooted nature to look down on such things that we have made up our minds as to what would happen with out John saying it.

While not right, and I know many a woman that was screwed over by a man she loved or had the ill luck of having him pass away leaving her by her self, there is a deep seeded ingrained social sigma on single mothers. While I completely agree that in Gor that a woman that willingly spread her legs to a man out side of companionship and then got with child would likely be collared, when a woman is then a victim of forces out side her own control such as a woman whose companion vanishes, dies, or other wise vanishes; or the worst case of a free woman being raped, why would the law punish the free for some thing she did not do. The warriors of a given Home Stone are sworn to protect the citizens of that Home Stone. In the case of a rape that begot a child, why would the woman suffer when the warriors failed in their task? The warriors are bound by code to swear only to defend or avenge. If they swear to the former they must guard well their charge least it change to the latter. But instead you would arrest the victim? Widows having lost a mate arrested like a harlot and enslaved because some one stuck a spear though her guy? Gor is a crazy harsh place, but unless I find or am shown quotes, I am not sure any more about this one.

Slightly off OP here, but I have to because it is one of my pet peeves, I want to address the issue of rape/child role play. Before I really bite into this, I just want to let you know where I am coming from. Though Kail Lefevre is a Warrior, Stephon Sorbet, also me, is a physician. I trained under Lady Arabella and Leopold of the physicians cast. I started in old Essex when Dave still owned the sim, and later moved on to Ven on the Vosk. I started my role play life in GE, and because of it I got a LOT of practice in the ways of healing. So much so that I grew sick of it and moved on. During my time though I learned a great deal about who Gor physicians work and how things like the shoots and slave wine worked. Because of this, I find my self grinding my teeth and it is all I can do to not kill some one when I hear of another rape role play that started with a gallon of breeding wine and ended with the man telling the woman she was now with child.

It doesn't work that way. Breeding and Slave wine are not magic. They don't work like a light switch. While giving slave wine to a slave and then having your way with her is fine, it is only because if there is an egg waiting you can reasonably debate that once the slave wine really sets in that the egg would abort once it hit the blood tissue. The reverse is not true. Once you gave the breeding wine it would not turn on those organs fast enough to that a man taking her right after the drinking would result in a birth. For Christ sake it just hit her belly, give it time to digest and really work on the organs. Breeding wine pure and simple has put one value, counting the effects of slave wine. I have pulled every quote on the subject out of books 1- 27 and not once does it suggest or say other wise. One last thing, people are free to role play how they want, but it is unrealistic for a free woman to get with child because of a rape in gor. Serum shots or no, the female human body has a limited number of eggs before it runs out and the female reproductive system shuts down. Because slave wine shuts this system down completely and because I know from the quotes I have found that free women took sweetened slave wine, it would be more likely that any woman you ran into that was not companioned would be on it. So short of making her drink breeding wine, waiting a couple days, and THEN raping her, I just don't see it.

Back to the OP, I there for think that the only way a woman should have to hide herself being with child is if she were silly enough to start a child role play with her lover before they were companioned. A free woman acting like a slut deserves a collar. A free woman of virtue that keeps her legs closed to all but her companion should not suffer for the turns that life takes.

I agree with you that it is not plausible, according to our knowledge of science and/or medicine, but since when has the plausibility ever been a reason to allow or disallow anything here in Gor?

The issue of a FW possibly getting pregnant by her Intended who then leaves SL/Gor for some reason came up once where I was serving as Magistrate. A few on the sim asked me OOC if her being pregnant was going to result in some legal consequences for the FW.  I asked on this site and with others more knowledgable about Gor than me about what the legal basis would be for me to "do something" and I got little direction and no references in any of the books that pertained to it.   I assume there could be extreme situations that can happen with these circumstances that could involve legal consequences, but otherwise all I heard was that this would be a family matter to decide, not a legal one.

Never, but it my hope that some people might read my words and wanting to play it right might benefit from what I have to say.

Speaking purely on the issue of a lady of Gor being with child by her intended, sounds like she was not companioned yet. That is an issue of legal matters I would think. I've had my share of companions over the years, and I almost never waited until the contract to fool around. But I was always discreet about it. Well. With one notable exception. Even then in a manner that would not of allowed some one to find out. I get the feeling on Gor that a lady the opens her legs freely to a man with out being companioned to him is a slut, and sluts are slaves. That does mean I don't think it happens. I know it does. Happened in Book 2. Tatrix allowed Tarl to use her like a slave, some would debate that she was at the time. He did buy her as one. I can't say I completely disagree with the thought either. Still. It leaves a lot of grey area there. I do think though that being caught in this sort of behavior, such as turning up with child when you've not been raped nor companioned would earn her a collar. Even if it was just from her father.

I don't know, Kail,... if we start judging Gorean medicine on whether it's actually plausible, we might be opening up a whole can of worms.  Where will it end....?
