Just like any place they have good and bad roleplayers.  That being said that kind of 'welcome' would have had me turning around as well.  If they don't want to open the gate then unlock it.  Or are they afraid their pixels might get stolen?   Grin

I understand the whole issue about gorean gates being locked. It's book. Gorean cities were well protected because there was always the possibility of threat of attack of some sort. There were always guardsman there however to offer or deny passage to those that wished entry.  Since having a guardsman at the gate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (because let's face it, Second Life IS a 24/7 world) is not only unrealistic it's completely impossible in SL, the only thing that gates do is prevent players from discovering your community.

And I don't know one single role play venue in Gor who is turning players away because they have too many. In fact the 'recruiting' is pretty sickening. But I digress.

When I see gates, I don't even bother anymore. I don't want to jump through hoops and over hurdles just to get into a city, I just want to role play.

Or are they afraid their pixels might get stolen?   Grin

And exactly!!!  Honestly what is so precious in your make-believe world that you have to protect it from folks that just want to come and play with someone? No one is going to raid an empty village or city (well maybe an idiot would). There's no fun in that. And as far as women and slaves go? There are those women who will always throw themselves in harms way and be capped because it's what they like to do, and there are those that will do whatever they can to keep that sort of play out of their game. No set of walls is ever going to change that.

So I challenge all sim owners...open your gates. I think you'd be surprised at how your city/village/camp might begin to flourish.

Corcyrus now has gates and I think most of us REALLY try to make a point to get to the gates when the bell get's rung and rp with whoever is there.   I have found it a good way to have that first interaction with a new person. Unless there is just no one in the city I think a city has a responsibility to respond to the bell being rung......or don't put up walls and a gate!

But why the gates?  In fact why the rebuild? It was a beautiful city as it was before.

Yes, until the day where you will be involved in RP with someone on the sim, with no other people willing to go to open the gate, or like you, busy in RP... Believe me, breaking a RP for going to open the gate, it's just a pain. Closed gates tend to keep visitors away....

Closing a gate for a raid I can understand. Otherwise, to me anyway, it sends the message:

"Welcome to the city of Self Absorbed. We are content RPing with ourselves and have no need for outsiders. But thank you for expressing interest and have a great gorean day"

I'm not sure if removing gates really helps much.

Imperial Ar TPed you right into the middle of the city back in the days, yet still everyone was hiding up in their towers.
So I wouldn't be too surprised that even if you did remove the gates that those same people still would be unwilling to come RP with you. At the same time I've seen a handful of men state that gate-RP when they were guards has been some of the better RP scenes they've had in their history in SL Gor.

My inclination would be towards no gates, but at the same time the builds need to be open and centralized enough to encourage RP, because simply removing a gate won't help all that much... Might as well just put a gate there, or a gate to the more wealthy parts of the city, and let the local residents themselves decide wether they want it open or closed while they're RPing there, and let them open and close it in RP...

Heck a black caste showed up at  Maelstroms door and I answered . If I get capped then so be it. Everyone deserves role play. You can only be the only person that creates role play for yourself. if the door rings and you don't answer it, how do you know what type of rp your missing? You don't. Take the chance and do so. I get Ims all the time about ooc things, and if they are interested still I tell them to take it to rp, if they don't then it's their fault.

Wow.. well now..was not expecting that... I mean... *slap* don't do that again  Wink Roll Eyes

But really though-- it's true. I myself have a bad habit of not complaining of no role play. So I have been trying to find ways to create it, even if it be by myself. In all honesty some of the best role play I have had is alone. It helps me create my character more, and develop my style.

* ramond lax rubs his cheek, "Was it good for you too?"

Ok On Gates, I am a BIG Hypocrite when it comes to gates.  When i play my Warrior character, I will INSIST on a gate, Not only that but one that closes and Locks.  If you need to open the gate, fine, do so, but I wanted it closed at all times and for guests to ring a bell, knock at the door and ask to be let in.  Quite frankly it is what is needed to defend your home, and THAT should be a Warriors first duty, protect and Honour his homestone.

Now, as a Merchant/thief in Tarnwald, when i visit another city, I get to a gate and wait.. and wait... and wait.. and then some free woman comes up and asks me to remove my bow, like that would stop me from taking her anyhow, if i had wanted to, and it's a song and dance to get in and just RP.. it is a pain in the ass.

That being said, I think about how a gate in a City WOULD work. During the day, Open, Guarded sure, and people were watched to ensure the people coming in were not their for harm.   at night, closed.  When we were in Saph, we compromised with the rule "If a defender is in the City, the gates were opened.  If not the gates were closed"  This generally allowed people to come and go, and and allowed us the defensibility of the City.  Now i can't COUNT the times people forgot to close the gates... But it still worked in the long run I think.

I can no longer be bothered with sims that have closed gates and I need to talk my way into a city.  It kills the start of any RP there and puts a bad taste in my mouth immediately.

If I get asked name and home stone one more time ... I will smash the gate.  If I am there to cause problems for you IC (like start a fight), I am just going to lie.

I was in a city once waiting at the gate, and the guard is going on how he is "checking" to see if a slave is available to give me a tour of the city (I hate tours more then I hate gates).  So I started replying how special I felt that he felt I was important enough to get a slave to personally give me a tour of the city.  Usually when I enter a city I walk around to find things on my own.  I think my sarcasm was lost on him.

A city would have guards at the gate watching people coming and going, but unless something dire had happen, your gates would be open and people constantly milling in and out.  You would suffocate city trade otherwise.

When I go to a sim I like to pretend it is a real city.  Sure you may only have half a dozen avatars on site, but you should pretend, ie. roleplay, that you are indeed a city.

If people are worrying about raids simply walking in, have it in your rules to have separate TP areas in for raiding parties, and when people come to raid, close your gates.  And if they don't, then you get the bonus of calling invalid.   Wink

I had business in a city, not a kill, I was hired to deliver a message. I walk up to the city. Gates are locked, guessing land group access only.  I stand there rubbing my chin thinking...'Hmm..." After about 10 min someone shows up,  "Tal I need in, I have business within."  Response... "Well, I can not let you in, see I am a guest and do not have access to the gates, to let people in or out."   So... he was locked in and I was locked out.  I asked, can you get someone who can let me in? His reply, well there all mostly afk at the moment...

I left. Contacted the client, sorry... I won't rp there.  Haven't been back since.  True story.

If you got to have locked city gates, have the warriors to man them. If you don't have the man power to man them:  1. remove them  or 2. consider closing the sim cos not enough people want to play there.

This pretend there a 1,000 guards and Gorean cities were populated, ok sure but when I walk up to a gate and not one of these pretend guards will let me in when I have legit business there... so dumb.
