Came across this notecard in world and its backed up by a lot of book stuff so thought I'd post it for those who'd find it useful Smiley I know im just a kajira but, really irks me when i am out serving and I hear FM going on about the stupidest reasons to threaten a Mistress with a collar.....

Collaring FW More Difficult Than Most Think
by Ari Blackthorne on Tue Feb 03, 2009 3:16 pm

In Laura we had a numbskull actually try to collar a woman (wtf do we always say "free woman" - if they aren't "free" we use another title - forest girls, slaves, sluts, femwarriors - whatever)

So anyway, this collaring was because the woman was belligerent. HE threatens her and all that and SHE finally says "try it". So he does. A slaver not only doesn't defend the woman. Not only doesn't just stand idly by. But actually collars the woman after she is face-stripped by the first. The first, being dumbass-pussy-whipped-baby-face material runs-off (poofs) - cusses out the administration in OOC IM and is now in another city, no doubt bad-mouthing the entire sim and people of Meadowlands and Laura.

Meh.

So, to prepare for the trial of the slaver, a LOT of research is done about collaring free women. Seriously. Hours and pages upon pages of quotes and descriptions from the books.

All free men will hate me now as all women will now get FAT HEADS and TURN BOLD. The idea that a Gorean man is a man and may do as he pleases is ridiculous onlinism of the most high.

So, if you know someone described by the "what's with every free man wanting to collar a free woman" thread (paraphrased - can't find it right now to link), send them to this message here and if they have any maturity at all and have managed to not become a dumbass bonehead, they might actually learn something.

The results of our research is posted in the next message in this thread.
It is a culmination of research by six people and what you will see is the summary written by Markos Binder.

And if it's not good enough for you, I have about 10 printed pages worth of notecards full of book quotes I'd be happy to pass along to you.

In a nutshell:

The free woman is HIGHLY RESPECTED in Gorean cities.
The free woman has POWERFUL RIGHTS IN LAW in Gorean cities.
The free woman is EQUALLY PROTECTED by the Home Stone.
The free woman actually has LEGAL PROTECTION AGAINST COLLARING.

Uh-hum. Yeap. no shit or shinola.

And in all the hours of searching, not a single instance of a man collaring a free woman for anything she said (or even violence exhibited) toward him, within the walls of her own Home Stone.

For all you free men who think you are all powerful and mighty by right that you can do any damned thing you please to any female: read it and weep. Then grow the fuck up.

------------------------------

What is the status of a Free Woman of Gor?  Is she allowed to speak her mind, argue with a man, insult him, even threaten him by thought and word?  Almost certainly.  Does she face enslavement for these acts?  The answer is without a doubt NO.

The books describe three situations under which a Free Woman can be enslaved.

I) Legal Proceding: (See "LEGAL EXAMPLES")
A Free Woman may be subject to enslavement by decree of a magistrate if convicted of a crime, especially repeat offenders.

II) Conduct becoming a slave (See "ACTIVITY EXAMPLES")
A Free Woman may be collared for conduct becoming of a slave, or showing an inner slave nature.

III) Capture (See "CAPTURE EXAMPLES")
A Free Woman taken when her home stone is destroyed can be enslaved by her captors.  She is often given a choice of death or enslavement.  This is codified in the merchant laws as such (See Capture Examples)

*** LEGAL EXAMPLES ***

The principle he had alluded to pertains to conduct in a free woman which is taken as sufficient to warrant her reduction to slavery. The most common application of this principle occurs in areas such as fraud or theft. Other applications may occur, for example, in cases of indigency and vagrancy. Prostitution, rare on Gor because of female slaves, is another case. The women are taken, enslaved, cleaned up and controlled. Indulgence in sensual dance is another case. Sensuous dance is almost always performed by slaves on Gor. A free woman who performs such dancing publicly is almost begging for the collar. In some cities the sentence of bondage is mandatory for such a woman.
    ---Renegades of Gor, 21:372

*** ACTIVITY EXAMPLES ***

"In many cities, such actions, attempting to spy on masters and slaves, disguising oneself as a slave, garbing oneself as a slave, even in the supposed secrey of one's own compartments, lingering about slave shelves and markets, even exhibiting an interest in, or fascination with, bondage, can result in a reduction to bondage. The theory is apparently that such actions and interests are those of a slave, and that the female who exhibits them should, accordingly, be imbonded." (Magicians of Gor, p.50)

"Conduct indicating suitability for the collar, of course, can be interpreted in various ways, and more broadly and narrowly. It is almost always understood, of course, fortunately for women, and as I suppose the phrase itself makes clear, in the special legal sense of the phrase, as having to do with overt behavior rather than psychological predispositions and such."  (Renegades of Gor, p.372)

**********
It should be noted here that we are shown quite explicitly that a woman cannot be reduced to slavery by mere thoughts, she must carry out OVERT action.
So any man can collar a woman he finds acting in a slavelike manner, yes?
    Actually: no.
**********
…in some cities a free woman who might be found with bared legs is taken in hand by magistrates, tried and sentenced to bondage. After the judge's decision has been enacted, its effect carried out upon her, reducing her to the status of goods, sometimes publicly, that she may be suitably disgraced, sometimes privately, by a contract slaver, that the sensitivities of free women in the city not be offended, she is hooded and transported, stripped and chained, freshly branded, a property female, slave cargo, to a distant market where, once sold, she will begin her life anew, fearfully, as a purchased girl, tremulously as the helpless and lowly slave she is.
---Mercenaries of Gor, 5:69

**********
We see here that the woman must be found guilty of having acted as a slave, by a city official/magistrate, before she can be enslaved.  No man can collar a Free Woman simply because he thinks she is acting as a slave, it must be proven in court.
**********

*** CAPTURE EXAMPLES ***

"You understand further, of course," said he, "that under Gorean merchant law, which is the only law commonly acknowledged binding between cities, that you stand under separate permissions of enslavement. First, were you of Ar, it would be my right, could I be successful, to make of you a slave, for we share no Home Stone. Secondly, though you speak of yourself as the Lady Elicia of Ar, of Six Towers, you are, in actuality, Miss Elicia Nevins of the planet Earth. You are an Earth girl and thus stand within a general permission of enslavement, fair beauty quarry to any Gorean male whatsoever.
---Slave Girl of Gor, p 394

**********
This introduced the concept of "PERMISSIONS OF ENSLAVEMENT".  In other words, since she no longer has a home stone and laws to protect her, she stands under "permission of enslavement", and he is within his right to collar her.  Here she is also found to be from Earth, and have no home stone anyway, so stands under another "permission of enslavement".

One odd side note to capture is the collaring of a woman for whom a man has saved her life.

And yet it was not a strange thing, particularly not on Gor, where bravery is highly esteemed and to save a female's life is in effect to win title to it, for it is the option of a Gorean male to enslave any woman whose life he has saved, a right which is seldom denied even by the citizens of the girl's city or her family. Indeed, there have been cases in which a girl's brothers have had her clad as a slave, bound in slave bracelets, and handed over to her rescuer, in order that the honor of the family and her city not be besmirched
---Priest Kings of Gor, 20:161-162

All of this tells us about the acceptible reasons for collaring a Free Woman. This brings us to the matter of being mouthy, annoying, aggressive, challenging, and several other adjectives. The books tell us much concerning this.

Whereas a free woman may often make a man angry with impunity, she being lofty and free, this latitude is seldom extended to the slave.
Blood Brothers or Gor - Page 221

"Beware your words," I cautioned her.
"I am a free woman," she said. "I can speak as I please."
I could not gainsay her in this. She was free. She could, accordingly, say what she wished, and without requiring permission.
Mercenaries of Gor - Page 7

This type of response, however, however natural on Earth in such a situation, would not be feasible on Gor in a slave. Gorean free women, of course, may do what they wish. The slave girl, on the other hand, does not compete with the master, but serves him.
Explorers of Gor - Page 39

This brings us to a story that takes place describing the actions of Free Women, as they try to destroy a tavern:

...Once in Ar, several years ago, several free women, in their anger at slaves, and perhaps jealous of the pleasures of masters and slaves, entered a paga tavern with clubs and axes, seeking to destroy it. This is, I believe, an example, though a rather extreme one, of a not unprecedented sort of psychological reaction, the attempt, by disparagement or action, motivated by envy, jealousy, resentment, or such, to keep from others pleasures which one oneself is unable, or unwilling, to enjoy. In any event, as a historical note, the men in the tavern, being Gorean, and thus not being inhibited or confused by negativistic, antibiological traditions, quickly disarmed the women. They then stripped them, bound their hands behind their back, put them on a neck rope, and, by means of switches, conducted them swiftly outside the tavern. The women were then, outside the tavern, on the bridge of twenty lanterns, forced to witness the burning of their garments. They were then permitted to leave, though still bound and in coffle. Gorean men do not surrender their birthright as males, their rightful dominance, their appropriate mastery. They do not choose to be dictated to by females.

Notice that even though they attempted to destroy property, carried tools, and were a threat to men, they were NOT collared. They were chastised, punished, and sent on their way, having learned better. Even in a severe case like this, they were not collared.

Further, we find evidence that Free Women were treated with great respect:

The men, save I, rose as one to their feet, for Gorean men commonly stand when a free woman enters a room.
Guardsman of Gor - Page 255

Free women, in being free, command attention when they speak. It is their due.
Explorers of Gor - Page 354

Given the weight of evidence, and the dearth of evidence to the contrary, I find it likely that no man would collar a Free Woman of his own home stone without obvious evidence that she was acting in a slavelike manner, and he would then turn her over to the magistrate for a decision on the matter. Further, it seems quite likely and in fact required that a man of a home DEFEND the Free Women of the city with his life, if need be. He would defend her from collaring by outsiders, and even those within his own home who may be acting inappropriately.

In short, There is no law in the books that states a free woman may be legally enslaved for being insolent, insulting, ridiculing or demeaning a man.

That is incorrect by the very quote itself:

Quote
The women were then, outside the tavern, on the bridge of twenty lanterns, forced to witness the burning of their garments. They were then permitted to leave, though still bound and in coffle. Gorean men do not surrender their birthright as males, their rightful dominance, their appropriate mastery. They do not choose to be dictated to by females.

They were stripped naked and led permitted to leave 'bound and in coffle'.

And of course you will get people vehemently arguing with you about the last portion of that quote:

Quote
Gorean men do not surrender their birthright as males, their rightful dominance, their appropriate mastery. They do not choose to be dictated to by females.

I think there is a fine line drawn there.. in the sand somewhere... no matter how hard it is to see.  The debate always rages on as to where that line is drawn, and the line is typically drawn in the sand with the tip of a man's sword who is very well-versed in how to use it and get his way.

There's more than ample evidence as you pointed out where FW run their mouth with apparent impunity.  One example I really enjoy is in Savages (or maybe Blood Brothers?) where a red savage FW (Bloketu?) absolutely torments some of the men (especially Cuwignaka) and trots off smugly on her kaiila, but she finally has to pay her dues in a collar.  I think MOST examples I can recall from the books end with that, ultimately.  Talena taunting Tarl, even using his own Codes against him... the Rencer girl who rapes the larl piss out of Tarl (Bosk)... And so on.

All said and done, I am apt to support the notion that a FW may run her mouth to any free men visiting her Torvie village, wagon or Outlaw camp, and yes, even her fine southern City.  Provided they are prepared to receive the consequences of their IC actions when they cross that hazy line.

To be honest, I find it absolutely hilarious when even a slave gets mouthy and I can sense the Free Man she's being mouthy to is coming totally unglued in a nerd rage and about ready to punch his screen because that's so not "BtB".

What's so not "BtB" and really totally un-Gorean in character (imo) is a Master who can't maintain his composure when these things happen in the roleplay exchange and that loss of control is communicated in the roleplay response to it.

What i often wonder about this subject is that if a man runs his mouth off to another man, you would expect concequences, perhaps a fight break out, between warriors a challenge made, perhaps even wars started over such arguments or disagreements. Its stated in the books that a woman is literally aloud to say whatever she pleases to a man with no concequences whatsoever? I know alot of females will say and think `well cant you handle a verbal argument with a woman?`, im not being sexist at all in this next statement, but lets face it, you cant really reason with a woman when it comes down to it. Once a woman gets going in an argument, there is no stopping them. Women instead of physical strength, have strength of the tongue. All females in Gor whether free or slave are meant to act submissively and with respect to the Men.

Regarding to the quotes and references Spirit made, and im not saying she is wrong, would this mean that women in Gor are exempt from punishment unless having incorrect dress code or acting like a slave? They can literally go around telling men they stink of s**t and telling them to f**k off and there`s actually not a thing you can do about it. How about if a woman said it to an Ubar? Is she still covered by these laws? Seems as if it gives women a good reason to go round acting in such ways, just because they can. Is it not true in the North that once a woman is thrown in a bond circle, she is then a Bond? Does this not contradict these matters discussed?

I marked the crucial points in bold. Respect happens commonly mostly in the surroundings of caste work. Barely one plays daily life.
Rights in Law... barely a sim maintains a set of IC laws anymore - such stopped I think 2 years ago - a set that puts RP challenges to all city roles, FM, FW, Slaves and what not.
In most sims so, RP is reduced to some chit chat that directs into minor conflicts and taunting or to create affiliations and sympathies between two or more players. Players reduced their surroundings to the most comfortable to them, especially that men can do anything. I have had warriors tell me that I have no clue about Honor of a Warrior, warriors not ashamed by the stripe of shame, Scribes rejoicing and looking forward to a me having him abused sexually by a slave girl while he is bount, BTB warriors that did not care to be bested by a woman yet denying that they were now widely considered slaves themselfes. If players of male avatars would face the BTB challenges to their roles aside the bright sides they claim for themselfes now, they would BE HAPPY if they would be capped just by a disney panny that seeks a round of sex. No, Gorean men are supposed to inspire the feeling of needing to be respected by their own behavior. If the player of a male avatar fails to instill the feeling of rather needing to respect him, e.g. by acting like a meak earthen, metrosexual boyfriend, he will not find a slave, panther or FW to respect him really. They will be bratty, taunting, dancing on his nose. Why? Because it is a hell of a lot of work to roleplay baseless fear about that a man might become strict and punishing if he plays all lovely cuddly and soft.

A man can be well polite and respectfull himself, yet appear strong and demanding so people will respect him, be it for his achievements in his caste, his manly appearance or both.

Underplaced quote says that a FW can really insult free man heavy, and that most Gorean men just laught about it. It does not however mean she can say everything. The moment she tries to manipulate men with her words, she comes in the danger zone. Manipulation by females is in Gor a collarable offense, for slaves even a capital one. And many insults are ment to manipulate. I can call a guy a stinking bosk, he would laught. But if I call him a coward, in the hope he starts a raid somewehere, its manipulation. Of course not all Gorean men can handle such insults laugthing. The stinking bosk insult to Kamchak, he later revenged on Aphris by putting her in the dungsack. However at that point she was slave, when she was a FW he could not touch her.

Quote from:  Mercenaries of Gor
"Did you strike me because I challenged your
manhood?" she asked. "I did not really mean it. It is only that
I was terribly angry. I did not think."
"You were not struck for such an absurd reason," I said.
"You are, after all, a free woman, and free women are entitled
to insult, and to attempt to demean and destroy men. It is
one of their freedoms, unless men, of course, should decide
to take it from them. You were struck, rather, because you
were attempting to manipulate me."

I think a LOT of men in SL still go by this fallacy of "you're only free because I let you be free" and they take that and run with it.

They rape women of their own home stone and then they throw OOC tantrums when they're called on the legal ramifications of it.

I dont know how many cases I've seen of it not only in my city, but in others, where you get a man who happens to be good at combat thinking he can get away with anything because his answer to everything is "oh go duel me for it".  That's not Gorean.  Goreans I believe were law abiding citizens within their cities.

Its incredibly frustrating.  Too often I see women being told "take ICC for your ICA."  But we dont see men being held to the same standard because too many sims are afraid of pissing off the dude who's good at combat and dont want him to go to another competing sim.

Its saddening.  I wish I knew what could be done about it.  But when the men create OOC drama because of their IC actions... its laughable.  And it really makes me want to throw my hands up.

It is my understanding that Free Women can say and do whatever they wish, they are afterall, Free Women, and in the southern regions of Gor especially, are protected by their homestone. Like in the information I shared, where it states, that by Gorean Law in the books, Free Women are protected by their homestone, so anything as bad as a reduction to slavery would have to go before a Magistrate.

As for the Ubar thing - too many in SL take this as a constant. its not.  Ubar was a title given to someone who would lead during times of War, it was not a constant title befitted someone like say, scribe, or Lead physician etc. It was a temporary office. After war was over, the 'Ubar' would give up that title and cities run by administration.

Where Northern FW are concerned, they, it is my belief, go under different rules then southern Fw. Northern homes dont have homestones like southern ones do, although they have something similiar... Its my belief that its mentioned somewhere in books about Tovoldslanders carrynig their homestone around with them. Wherever a Torvy male is, is home. Giving way to notion that the northern counterparts believed their home is in their hearts, not what is around them persay like in southern cities.

And I agree, any Man worth His Gorean Salt would not be worried over words of a Woman in Gor. Sure, for every action theres a reaction and consequences to actions, but does that mean a Man needs to belittle and threaten collar to any Free Woman who happens to stand Her ground on things and in some brief way, question the size of his penis (so to speak)

Ari is one of the best slaver roleplayers in sl gor. He has a new avatar.
He wrote that in response to the out of control reactions by the men about collaring any FW, at the time. It was way out of control, ignoring any book support actions. Great article.
Now.
There's the flip side .
IN the books, all the women when they are being mouthy/verbally abusive /disparaging to the men, its because of a action/verbal words of the men at/to the women OR those women  have a great interest in  the man and want the man really to collar them-the old gorean this is what the women really want/need from that man routine[/i].

NOT like sl gor where bored women walk up and start ragging on the guys just because they can for their egos, want a reaction, or some cheap conflict roleplay thrill.

That gets old REAL fast for the guys. The sl free women roleplayers think they're being so very original being by the book and such, never realizing it's the 100th time that day/week a roleplaying FW woman has done this verbal abuse. Even the roleplaying guys have their limits.
And the guys simply walk off from those women, avoid them, or just flat out react with a threat.

When a free woman in roleplay verbally abuse  a male roleplayer, that FW better damn well better have a real reason and purpose, other then her needs for cheap ego roleplay or scoring on a guy.

I've got a vicious lash of a verbal whip when it comes to my words. But I use it sparingly and only WHEN it's for a purpose or reason in roleplay.

Example: a warrior issued a formal challenge to another warrior and wanted to use a bow. Out came the sneering cutting FW remark of "A bow!? So you are some furry bottomed desperate little panther girl who is not allowed or strong enough to use a man's weapon like a sword?"
The guy of course got mad, then realized why I cut into him, most of all when other warriors agreed with me about how a challenge shouldn't be with a bow.

Funny, I saw such like scene last week, and had same though. Only i did not launch the comment for the situation did not suit well.

But you are right use it sparsely, they can not touch you openly, but you draw the attention of men. Thats never good for a free women (or slave).

As a man who has collared a woman for her mouth before.. I will give the example that caused it and leave it out there for comment.

The woman was my companion, not a stranger, this would not have changed the outcome if she had been though.
The woman out right called Ormr a liar, used the very word, 3 seperate times in public despite several warnings given to hold her insulting (and innacurate) tongue. I even tossed her into a snow bank hoping she would cool off..chuckles..needless to say she did not.

Now.. calling a man names..insulting his hygene or how he eats.. commenting on his choice of bond or companion.. or your dislike for his over all person.. these are all things most men should and would ignore with a laugh. Frankly I could give an urts ass what women think of me when I am IC as Ormr. That being said..if you insult a man's honor.. if you do that.. you should expect a harsh reaction.

The woman I collard was my companion, I could have collard her for any reason I wanted, and yet I still threw her to the hold jarl for judgment because it was used as an example of how the decision would be made up north.. she had insulted my honor as an honest man in public 3 times..and as I have seen written here already..if another man had done the same it would have ended in spilled blood. In my eye there is no difference in the sex of one insulting the honor of another.. a man I would try to kill.. a woman I will collar.

I love the title of this thread. Specifically the use of the words "more difficult". It of course doesn't make a statement, like the notecard seems to make about how it is nearly impossible to collar a FW of your own homestone without a magistrate.

Quote
"What manner of place is this," begged the girl, lifting the
chain on her collar, "and is this how they treat all women?"
"I shall not expatiate on what manner of place this is," said
Ginger, "for you, yourself, shall soon learn, and well. And this
is not how they treat all women. Women on this world, most
of them, enjoy a status and freedom of which you, from
Earth, cannot even conceive. Their raiment is splendid, their
station is lofty, their mien is noble, their prestige is
boundless. Dread them, and fear them—"
The girl looked at her, frightened.
"For you are not such a woman," said Ginger.
The girl clutched the chain, kneeling on the block.
"No," said Ginger, "you are not such a woman. You are
less than the dust beneath their feet."

This is where IC rules, need to be left IC, and handled accordingly. As very wonderful RP can be had between two knowledgeable players. The man who isn't in chest thump mode, resorting to the old collar threat at whim, the woman who doesn't believe she can do as she pleases without any at all possible consequences. Women would have many men to control her every behaviour on Gor. Despite what she might have a right to do, she might have a guardian, a father, a free companion. All to whom she must remember to honor by her frigidity and pride. Well that is if they let her leave the house.  Grin

But that's all been said very well in the previous posts.

I've only these few quotes to add to this topic, because for me, nothing is black or white. All cities on Gor had their own laws, some cities might choose to make collaring a woman more impossible then another city. And I wish to mostly address the "courting the collar" circumstance to being enslaved.

If a man comes across a woman with tits hanging out and blush on her cheeks at the compliment to her beauty what's to stop him from taking what he sees and desires? Hey, might not be legal.. but.. not all men obey the law. It is one reason women are covered up after all. Just as there are laws about using a slave that belongs to another man aka: theft, the laws for free woman, if she is a natural slave, her enslavement is considered a man's right to reduce her to.
Man's right trumps that of woman's right.

Of course, I love the idea of a woman being brought before a magistrate! I love anything that generates more RP. But a man doing a bad thing, is good RP too. Heck, he reduces a woman to slavery, then gets brought before the magistrate for it! whoot! And there are plenty of instances in the novels were women were enslaved without a magistrate present. Fighting Slave of Gor had that delightful scene with Melopenem and her rival.. Debt was called into repayment "Oh, can't pay? Darn... well I'll just take you instead" *evil grin*

Slave girls relish compliments.
Indeed, there is a Gorean saying to the effect that any
woman who relishes a compliment is in her heart a slave girl.
She wants to please. Most Gorean men would not think twice
about collaring a girl who responds, smiling, to compliments.
It is regarded as right to enslave a natural slave.

When I see these quotes I wonder how the natural slave thing would fit. I personally think all the men would look the other way. She is obviously desiring the collar isn't she? And Gor is a man's world where putting a woman where she belong is kinda the arcing storyline.

Then again, I think about Vella on the high bridges, flounting her stuff openly in clad kajir ( I think that was what she was wearing ), then stripping practically naked another free women, they stride off together a third woman (slave) in tow and go for drinks! All while the men looked upon the scene laughing.

See? Not black and white!

Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before... He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way.
