Junea gave a good example of this situation that us, who play a FW, we encounter too often. But men respect these women because they treat them nicely, they smile, they are warm. Sorry, they act like slaves. Respect the ones who do not act like slaves before all.

Quick RP Story:

When Canjellne was still open, one of the FW had long loose hair and cleavage, and was a scribe. And she was heated as hell and constantly teased the merchant.  Well, Dela remembered this particular woman a slave when Dela herself was a free woman in Clearchus.  So she made the point of telling the woman she knew who she was. And then she told the merchant. Needless to say, the hot free woman didn't stay free much longer.

Difficult characters are great, but I find free women that are purely mouthy because their player has some black & white caricature impression of their role from the books to be oh so dull, and I will avoid them. I like balanced characters that feel real. Tertionus is very much a gentleman, when in Gor, and particularly to free women who are appropriately attired and carry themselves well. To greet someone pleasantly and be met with a smirking snake or a tirade of abuse (for no reason other than the player's inability to play a -whole- character) is simply... tiresome and immersion breaking.

As for the sheer veil & cleavage thing - I won't even go there but to say I used to tackle it IC. Now I avoid improperly dressed free women because the few diamonds with a plausible reason and great role play to back it up are not worth searching through the rough of 'but my skin is too pretty to hide' in IM, and other associated tripe.

The problem is that very often - the free woman player does not even have to be mouthy or insulting. It is enough if she does not fit into the "oh so nice fw category" who likes to be sweet to everyone - espcially to the cute little slave girls. I never played my character as mouthy or as insulting to a free man. But she was no slave and always made that very clear. Meeting a free man you describe - my girl would have been all over that and would have been  charming as hell - in her witty and cool free womanly way  Wink

I do not think I ever openly insulted a man on that character. But I obviously made people very uncomfortable. I think a big part of it was how my character treated her own slaves - and the slaves of others. Not even cruel - but very matter of fact, as something that can have some value for her - or not. My free woman character is always her most dangerous when she is most pleasant and most polite!

It can be frustrating to play a character in a way that could lead to all kinds of interesting things - and not always end up in drinking tea and exchanging pleasantries - just to be beaten down, avoided, and threatened with a collar on a regular basis.

The best insult to insult scene in any of the books IMO is found in book 4, Nomads.

The daughter of a wealthy powerful man traded insults with the secret ubar of the Tuchuk over dinner. I can't pull the direct quotes right now because I'm at work, but this scene was classic and a fun read to me. It is also a great example of how a man can deal with challenging mouthy insulting free women.

This being said.. it gets seriously tedious when free women not only insult, but constantly challenge with insults anything a man says or does. It equates to an endless blah blah cluck cluck cluck peck peck peck.. which will always end up becoming a head ache unless its a well established back and forth from players who know each other pretty well..and have a reputation for this back and forth.

Most of us know how to walk away and ignore it without threatening a collar... I personally have never threatened a collar.. I don't threaten.. I just do it.. I also have only ever collard for being insulting when it calls my honor as a man to come into question..

Good rule of thumb to follow.. if what you say to a man would cause that man to try and kill another man for the same insult.. ya went too far... so think hard about ICA and ICC here..

edit to take out the extra 'c's that found their way into Tuchuk..

Sounds just right. Unfortunately, I think for free women, exercising their right to speak freely often gets them collar threats because men don't know what else to do or how to react. So then it becomes like the situation that I described where I avoid improperly dressed free women, or walk away from them. Free women who don't want to be collared end up playing either -very- selectively, or end up being the nicey-nice type you describe, that isn't reminiscent of the women in the books.

It's a shame, because all of those little interactions and clashes of culture and personality IC could be fantastic role play scenes.

Aphris of Turia is a great example of a free woman considering like (coarse word) a man that she despises because he is, for her, very lower rank than her. Also, she felt strongly protected and so, sure to be able to behave with a perfect impunity.
And Kamchak is a nice example of a clever man  Grin
