Just hoping anyone has some insight into men wearing jewelry or for that matter tattoos in Gor.

Anyone remember specific mentions?

Cheers

Tattoos only mention is facial and to identify tribes in the jungles of Schendi.

Merchants would wear fake poisonous teeth that could be made of gold, for example.
Samos, the Slaver, used earrings.
I think there's mention of rings as well.

Edited to correct Castes.

Men did wear jewelry that I know.. Wagon men.. Torvies.. lots of others... from rings to wrist bands to necklaces.. Tats..I don't think most had them mentioned.. but its not something I find overly offensive even without direct book quotes.. Goreans are decended from old earth cultures.. and many of them did mark the skin in some fashion or another..

Disclaimer here will read though that biker tats are not something I think you would see..

Tarnsman of Gor Ch 14 page 156 by John Norman.
Marlenus of Ar
"Around his neck he wore the golden chain of the Ubar, carrying the medallionlike replica of the Homestone of Ar."

Hunters of Gor Ch 1 page 8 by John Norman.
Samos  Port Kar
"There were small golden rings in his ears. He was a pirate, a slaver, a master swordsman, a captain of Port Kar."

Hunters of Gor Ch 6 page 97 by John Norman.
Young Seaman
"You, Master, " said Tina, "to a handsome young seaman who wore a wristlet studded with purplish stones, amethysts from Schendi. "would you be so kind to rise and come forward".

Outlaw of Gor ch21 page 191 by John Norman.
Targo the Slaver
"His thick fingers were covered with ring which glittered as he moved his hands. About his neck in the manner o fa steward, he wore a set of pierced coins thread on a silver wire. From the lobe of each small round ear, there hung an enormous earring, a sapphire pendant on a golden stalk."

There's always alot more, just a few quotes showing necklaces, earrings, bracelets, on men.

The  listings of tattoos are not the body/arm decorative routine-they are with a purpose and reason of identification in various tribes/cultures of Gor. They are for the men of the desert, the men of the jungles of schendi, and the wagon folks.
The thieves caste mark in Port Kar is a brand, not a tattoo.

Tribesman in Desert
Tribesmen of Gor by John Norman.
"I thrust back the sleeve of my shirt, revealing my left forearm. It did not bear the blue scimitar, tattooed on the forearm of a Kavar boy at puberty."

Jungles of Schendi
Explorers of Gor pg 259 by John Norman.
Bila Huruma
"on his cheeks and across the bridge of is nose there had been a swirling stitching of tattoo marks, the record of his transition, long years ago, into manhood."

Explorers of Gor  pg 499 by John Norman.
"Such things are not of interest to me" said Shaba. The tribal stiching of tattoo marks on his dark face wrinkled with a smile "

Wagon Folks

Nomads of Gor Chp 24 pg274  by John Norman.
"When I have time," said Harold, "I will call one from the Clan of Scarers and have the scar affixed. It will make me look even more handsome."

Nomads of Gor pg 15-16 by John Norman.
"The man facing  me had seven such scars ceremonially worked into the tissue of his countenance,  the highest being red, the next yellow, the next blue, the fourth black, then  two yellow, then black again. I recalled what I had heard whispered of once  before, in a tavern in Ar, the terrible Scar Codes of the Wagon Peoples, for  each of the hideous marks on the face of these men had a meaning, a significance  that could be ready by the Paravaci, the Kassars, the Kataii, the Tuchucks as  clearly as you or I might read a sign in a window or a sentence in a book.'

Mercenaries of Gor, pg. 46 by John Norman.
"On the face of Genserix, and on the faces of those about us, the males, were the thin, white, knife-edge lines, the narrow scars, by which it might be known that each had, in his time, undergone the same ceremony. By such scars one may identify Alars." ,

People think the caste of thieves have a tattoo, no, its a brand:

Raiders of Gor, page 104 by John Norman.
"There is even, in Port Kar, a recognized Caste of Thieves, the only such I know of on Gor...They are recognized by the Thief's Scar, which they wear as a caste mark, a tiny, three-pronged brand burned into the face, in back of and below the eye, over the right cheekbone."

Assassin of Gor, page 96 by John Norman.
"On his right cheek, over the cheekbone was the Thief brand of the Caste of Thieves of Port Kar, who use the small brand to identify their members."

Within reason, I have always thought that many things are possible if you can come up with a valid rp reason for it and it does not fly in the face of what is clearly noted in the books as not possible.  Make sense?  So my character has tattoos on his arms, back and one leg.

My rp story is: "His wounds from arrows and steel left deep scars on his body while the trauma of his ordeal turned his hair as white as snow. In the Kataii village where he was taken there was a barbarian slave who tended to his wounds and suggested he cover over his scars with ink and that is the source of them on his arms, his chest and leg."

That's my story and I am sticking to it. Smiley

Chuckles, admit it Mercy, you wear tattoos just because you like them and think they make your avatar look great, the roleplay story is just a *coverup* and justification for what you want to look like.
I really don't see warriors or such, hiding their scars. Thinking in terms of real life and my own military/cop family, the guys point to old round white scars of bullet holes, shrapnel wounds, etc. and tell the story of how they got it and what war/fight they were in.

Men did Wear Jewelry, and a few did have tattoos, but i personally beileve they were generally Meaningful marking of either tribal or caste signicicance, and not the general full body doodles that we often see in gor today.

That is just another example of Earth influinces being played out in everyday gor.
