Why?

Because they strike a dagger to the heart of the tenet of the submissive woman on Gor.

My comment on the blog.. went along the lines of.....

I think you are describing a modern feminist movement definition of panthers rather than what Norman portrayed.

A runaway kajira or a Free Woman with a bow and dagger wouldnt strike fear in the heart of a Gorean Man.. why should they ?? They are physically less evolved than a Gorean Man.. less skilled in the art of fighting, have inferior weapons and are probably half starved after living off road kill equivalent and berries..

If SL was made to reflect the actual attributes and physical differences between a Gorean Man and Gorean Woman.. eg.. men having 3 times the strength, superior weapons (greater accuracy, damage etc).. I doubt there would be very few people being panthers.. or at the very least.. actually behaving as physically inferior women hiding from Gorean Society, hunting small mammals which is more like the character described by Norman...

Now.. that doesnt mean you cant have spirit.. arrogance, attitude, guile, intelligence..... which again is a reflection of the Gorean panther and why they are so prized as slaves... ..

but that doesnt mean a Gorean man would be fearful of you .. amused perhaps, intrigued, initially cautious.. but at the end of the day.. a Gorean man would see you as just as a woman.. a possession, a slave without a collar and that the natural order of GOR is that women are not his equal..

remember you are a Gorean woman living in the forest trying to survive and havent suddenly been transformed by the Priest Kings into kick ass elite storm troopers with all the genetic attributes of a Gorean Man.

and one thing I have never understood in SL  .. if panthers are  rejecting Gorean society... why are there so many female slaves in panther camps  Huh.. isnt that against the mindset of panthers.. the oppression of women through slavery.

I think a group of panthers against one man WOULD worry the man. While granted, one woman does not have the physical strength to match a man, but a group working as one might. I also believe that a panther CAN take down a man in a hide and snipe technique. Not a full out 'I am going to attack you here I come!' type of offense. I believe if a man goes alone into a forest, he would have some fear if he came across a group of panthers or one who used this strategy.

I am also a believer if you allow panthers, the 'weaker females' option for the GM meter is acceptable if not required.
Lets get real here. If you are a woman, evolution has told us that we were the ones on the kitchen and we are the great thinkers. Men are the hunters and gatherers. Be creative if you are going to be a panther. Use your mind... not brawn.

You are trying to tell me you wouldn't be freaking out if you went frolicking into the woods and came across twenty some odd women with spears and bows?

putting on my Gorean head.. and not my human head.

If I was "frollicking" in the woods... it would have a purpose... to hunt down animals or capture panthers to sell as slaves.

Given what we know and assume about the mentality and behaviour of Gorean men in the context of the theme of GOR... in the case of a Larl... it would take several men to capture and kill a larl.. therefore you can assume there would be a degree of danger against such a beast and it would be an event relished and sought after by most men... if done well, a great source of pride and jubilation.

Now.. tracking and hunting females .. ermmmm.. again being Gorean... I would see it as a source of easy money, not something to be proud of.. or in fact something to be particularly undertaken with any degree of honour.. bit like pest controllers really... trap a few women, sell them and get some money.. go for a drink and find your favourite kajira to fur against a wall.

My greatest fear would be the shame and dishonour if I was caught by a panther.. the sense of stupidity, lack of skill in losing to a panther and the reaction of other Gorean men to being captured by a bunch of women.... hence the shaved head.. a mark of shame. not fear !!!!

seeing a panther in the woods would make me go.. "Great.. a few coins" ... not ... "Bloody Hell.... a panther.. oooooh I am scared and in fear of my life".... if it was a group of panthers... .. just like a hoarde of rats.. I would think "better be careful here.. I may get bitten"

Remember.. Gorean men regard themselves to be the superior of all women... irrespective if they have a bow or not...

I understand your thoughts and I agree wholeheartedly. But one man versus ten or more panthers?

As a Free Woman, the idea of a Panther coming and stealing me would indeed be frightening. They do strike fear in the eyes of women, Free or not. I would assume possibly what is meant that out of Free Women, slaves, and panthers, who would be the most threatening to a Man?

Thinking with my Earth mind, I indeed believe only the manliest of men do indeed frolic.

One thing that has always baffled me with SL Gor Panthers....

Where on earth did it happen in the books that they raided cities? Now granted I only read books 1 to 13 before Mr. Norman's paragraphing skills were too much for me to read, and I got tired of trying to acquire the books, but still.  What I remember of the panthers in the books is that they despised slaves and if slaves tried to join them more often than not they would be sold at the nearest trading post for candies/arrows/goods.  They roamed the woods in packs and were sexually repressed women afraid of being women. They were usually women who didn't want to be companioned off for some trade agreement or some such.

I find it really really hard to respect a raiding panther.  It'd be one thing if it was in a the woods of a city sim, and they captured idiots that roamed into their territory.  The fact that I've then see these same panthers try to lecture on what is valid drives me insane.  If you want to play in Gor why would then spit in the face of Gor?

I'm not terrified or scared of panthers. More annoyed and disgusted.

but that's just my 2 cps.

I get so annoyed when panthers even carry a bow. You know they are just itching to use it. Don't you just hate when a panther camp is on the border of a City and they shoot at you if you get 50 meters away? Unless your camp is hidden in the woods, you don't have the right to get shooter happy. Stop all this in your face fighting. Be real about what you are. If you tried to take down a man with a bow in a shooting match, you wouldn't win. You wouldn't escape a man by downing him. You would escape by running.

There are good groups of Panthers and bad groups of panthers, just like any other group in Gor...  Smiggles group is one I rate high. Last night I got to met and role-play with another new group of Panthers that came to Minus. I was impressed.

Thank goodness there are some out there who rp their role well.

... and if you were frolicking in the woods, you would be more terrified that someone would see you frolicking.

I would definitely not consider panthers the most 'feared woman on Gor'.  There were very few of them.
They fought amongst themselves a lot, they never left the woods, and their tribes rarely grew.  The blog suggests that panthers were a soon to be epidemic where all women pick up weapons and start fighting back... Most woman who came to the forests to join the panther groups simply got collared and sold back to the men.  So... not a real big threat there.
