I collected a number of common positions out of the books and the describe of their uses. This is not a complete list, just the most frequently positions. There are many more positions named or unnamed in the books and beside that some, that only exist online which I don’t mentioned here. If you think I forgot a important position, don’t hesitate to add it here   Grin

Bara

The slave moves to lay facedown upon the floor, forehead lightly touching the floor, legs straight with ankles crossed and wrists crossed at the small of the back

"Bara, Kajira!" he said. She rolled quickly to her stomach, placing her wrists behind her, crossed, and crossing her ankles, ready to be bound.
Explorers of Gor p77

Belly

The slave moves to her belly, hands palms down near the sides of her head, forehead to the ground and waits for further orders

"Stop," he said. "To your belly."
Then I was on my belly, on the tiles, my hands at the sides of my head, prone, before his curule chair.
Kajira of Gor p427

Bracelets

In this standard binding position the girl turns to face away from the Master, back and shoulders straight, wrists held at the small of the back for ease in attaching slave bracelets

"Bracelets," he snapped. She put her head in the air and placed her hands behind her back.
Hunters of Gor p146

Capture Position

The slave lays down upon her back, bending her knees to place her feet flat against the ground, hands at her side and remains motionless

"On your back," he said, "knees raised, heels on the floor." I then lay before him, in a standard, supine capture position.
Kajira of Gor p422

Display Position

Stands, feet about shoulders width apart, fingers laced behind the neck with elbows back, head up and eyes lowered.

The auctioneer did not strike her with his whip. He merely took her arms and lifted them, so that the position chain, attached to each side of the sales collar lay across her her upper arms. Then he had her clasp her hands behind the back of her neck, so that the chain, on each side of the collar, was in the crook of her arms, and she was exposed in such a way that she could be properly exhibited.
Explorers of Gor p36

Hair

The girl stands and bows at the waist, letting her hair fall forward for display, to be seized or for any other purpose the Master might require.  Another varient of this position sometime used is for the slave to stay in her previous position just bowing her head and letting her hair dangle before her for whatever use required.

I held my left hand open, at my waist. She stiffened, and looked at me, angrily. I opened and closed my left hand once. I saw her training in Gorean customs had been thorough. But she never thought that such a gesture would be used to her. She came beside me, and a bit behind me, and, crouching, put her head down, deeply. I fastened my hand in her hair. She winced. Women are helpless in this position.
Beasts of Gor p409

Heel

The slave goes to the Master's left if He is right handed, right if left handed and about one and a half paces behind Him. She follows His movements from that point.

Collar/Submission

Sometimes referred to as the collaring position or posture of female submission. In this position the slave kneels at the Master's feet and leans her body back, sitting upon her heels, with her arms extended upward, crossed at the wrists, and her head beneath them lowered in supplication.

"Assume the posture of female submission," I told her. She did so, kneeling back on her heels, her arms extended, wrists crossed, her head between them, down. She was weeping.
Tribesmen of Gor p359

 Lesha

Kneel, thighs well parted, back straight or slightly arched, head held high, chin tilted to the left, hands at back with wrists crossed. This position is used to clip a leash onto the collar or for simple display/inspection of a slave girl.

"Lesha," snapped the second officer to the blond girl. She spun from facing him, and lifted her chin, turning her head to the left, placing her wrists behind her, as though for snapping them into slave bracelets.
Explorers of Gor p76

Nadu

kneel with thighs spread wide, back held straight or arched slightly, breast thrust forward, head held high with eyes lowered,  sitting back on heels, hands resting palms up or palms down on thighs.   Palms up was considered a plea for rape in some circumstances.

Come now, my pretty slaves,' said Ginger, "kneel straight. Back straight, heads up. Back on your heels there! Spread those pretty knees. Yes, that is the way men like it. Put your hands, palms down, on your thighs. Good. good. Excellent!"   The girls now knelt in the coffle as pleasure slaves.
Savages of Gor p155

"Nadu!" he snapped. She swiftly turned, facing him, and dropped to her knees. She knelt back on her heels, her back straight, her hands on her thighs, her head up, her knees wide. It was the position of the pleasure slave.
Explorers of Gor p77

She_Sleen

moves to knees and elbows, hands clasped over your head, bottom in the air, ready for either being beaten on the bottom or being taken from behind like an animal

He knelt me there. "Put your head down, to the floor," he said. "Clasp your hands, firmly, behind the back of your neck." "Yes, Master," I moaned. He was then behind me. He put his hands, under my arms, on my breasts, sweetly and firmly. Then he moved his bands back, caressing my flanks. My head was down. My fingers were together, behind the back of my neck. I was in his collar. It was steel, I could not remove it. I belonged to him. My body hurt, from his whip, that of my master. My head hurt, from my hair, where I had been conducted, unceremoniously, to this location. "Please, Master," I sobbed. "Not like this! Not you, please!" "The slave is pretty," he remarked. "Oh!" I cried. "Oh!" "You have a lovely ass," he said. "Ohhh!" I said. "You may thank me," he said.
Kajira of Gor p434

Slave Lips

turn toward person who commanded it, purse lips and remain immobile until your freed from immobility with a kiss.

Similarly, I was not required to respond to certain sorts of commands, for example, to make "slave lips," pursing my lips for kissing, or to writhe slowly before my viewers.
Kajira of Gor p224

Standard Binding Position

When ordered into standard binding position the girl lays on the ground, wrists crossed behind the back and ankles crossed. (this is most likely another name for bara)

"Standard binding position," he said. I was prone. When a girl is prone, the standard binding position is to cross the wrists behind the back and to cross the ankles. I took this position instantaneously.
Slave Girl of Gor p125

Submission

kneels, bends at the waist, places cheek to the floor, takes the Master's right foot and places it upon her neck, places arms behind back, crossing them at the wrist.

Sula

lay on back on the floor, spread feet shoulder_width apart, and rest arms with palms up at sides, left knee flexed slightly to enhance the view. Keep eyes lowered and await inspection

"Sula, Kajira!" said the man. She slid her legs from under her and lay on her back, her hands at her sides, palms up, legs open.
Explorers of Gor p77

Tower Kneel

see nadu, alteration: knees are closed and thighs are pressed closely together (this position is used most often used to serve Mistresses)wrists may or not be crosses as your owner decides.

The position of the Tower Slave, in which Vika knelt, differs from that of a free woman only in the position of the wrists which are held before her and, when not occupied, crossed as though for binding...."
Priest Kings of Gor pgs46_47

Whipping Position

quickly drops to knees, and place forehead to the floor, hips raised high, cross arms across belly fingers gripping your sides.

I went to Targo, trembling, and knelt at his feet... I crossed my wrists beneath me and touched my head to the floor, exposing the bow of my back. It is the submissive posture of a slave girl who is to be punished. It is called Kneeling to the Whip.
Captive of Gor p200

Nice done Madras, I am doing something similar for an ingame-thing, maybe I will steal a few bits out here...

But.. the funny thing on the whole thing...

In german-sl-gor:
A group of 3 Free Men are standing with their kajirae in nadu (we remember, pleasure slave position, nothing to do with red-silk in fact), now a Free Woman arrives, every kajirae has to switch to tower

In english-sl-gor:
A group of 3 Free Woman are standing with their kajirae in tower, now a Free Man arrives, the kajirae are switching to nadu...

where in the books, anywhere, is stated that a white silk has to kneel in tower?
to go further, where in the books, anywhere, is stated that a red silk has to kneel in nadu?

Out of my understanding Wink
A Kajira has to kneel the way her owner wants it, don't even has to be kneel, they can also sit on the bottom during a meeting or a discussion or whatever, and nobody has just a bit of a right to discuss that or order the kajira in another position... That means... If you don't like that my White-Silk kneels with open thighs then you might ask me, if I am in a good mind, maybe I order her to change it, if not then walk away or life with it... that's the fact...

I agree with you,  i also think that it just depends on the wishes of the owner and - if it depends on what kind of slave its is. The position tower is - as the name says - normally used by the tower-slaves, and they normally do things like housework and so on. This doesnt say anything about if they are white- or redsilk (i remember that in the first books Tarls father offered him to use the tower-slave that brought him some food)

And in "dancer of Gor" the girl - i forgot the name - was trained to be a pleasure-slave and she had to kneel in nadu also when she was still a virgin.

And of course - if a master orderss a position to his slave then the girl has to stay in this position until the master cancel his order or gives a new one.

Of course those practices that whitesilks always kneel in tower and redsilkd in nadu are an onlineism as we have many more - maybe we can do something with this forum to clear some of them  Wink

@ San...thank you good to know about those diversify views..I always found that switching of the way to kneel really astonishing Wink
and I agree it is up to the owners decision how the slave would kneel

Just a quick question.

I was in nadu in the Gor Hub at the weekend.  This is my usual kneeling position and one I have never been asked to change.  My master expects me to nadu.  In the places that have been my homestone, I have knelt in nadu or bracelets, with a slight variation to tower for FWs, but even in this I've been told to stay in nadu at one homestone.

A Master IM'd me (OOC) to ask if I was in nadu for him even though he was standing quite some way apart from me.  He arrived with his slave after me and I was actually responding to a message.  He then tried to tell me that I should tower unless with my Master.  I have read a few of the books and have not heard of any slave closing her knees (apart from the FW issue).  I tried to tell him that I know very few slaves in SL that tower rather than nadu, and of very few cities or villages that ask this.  Also, I told him that my Master demands nadu.  He tried to tell me that I was wrong and should learn my slave positions.

Whilst I know this is a personal (Master or Homestone) choice, I still stand by the fact that most slaves in Gor SL nadu.  Has anyone else heard that the standard should be tower??

hmm...no - i've never heard something like that - the normal standard in SL is that whitesilks kneel in tower and redsilks in nadu - but no matter what "standards" are there, the most important is what your Master told you.

I've never heard of a master expecting someone to kneel in tower - mostly they like to see a girl kneeling in nadu - but i think kneeling in nadu is also an "invitation for use" for masters - maybe its because of that reason he talked to you - don't know if you are restricted or not... Wink

But anyway... isnt the Gor Hub OOC-terrain anyway? Then I more than ever dont understand why he discussed with you...cause then its your decision if you and how you kneel anyway  Grin

I've heard of at least one place that trains their girls to tower (and wear panties!) any time they are out of their home sim, so it's not totally unheard of in SLGor.  These discussions inevitably turn into some discussion of what's Gorean, but really the answer to that I think is that it is Gorean for a slave to do her best to be pleasing to the Free around her.  OOC areas are a whole different matter, technically you can just ignore all the rules and everyone there. I notice most people stay more or less in character though which is interesting sociologically.

People in SLGor regularly make all sorts of claims about positions (and loads of other details) that are fairly absurd when held up against the cannon of the books.  Personally I think the best one can do is follow one's Owner's rules first and then do whatever one can within the scope of one's Owner's rules to comply with the wishes of the Free that one encounters.  It is good to know the books well enough to be able to ignore random misguided advice once that particular Free evaporates, though!

I agree to your view Pia - thank you once more for posting it here - it is enriching to  read you.  Smiley

*rubs slightly her chin while thinking about her next sentences ... well...it brings me once more to the thought I didn't really understand when I started in gor. As I experienced most of the slaves get trained, have to learn mostly all about gorean attitudes, society and so one. In comparison with the people who choosed to play Free it is a shame what lots of them know. Hence they join the gorean cities/communities without having a clue how to behave as a Master/Mistress, give orders to slaves without any knowledge just to wield power and to be at the controls. Some meet seasoned persons, who will lead them as mentors which I do appreaciate, some will join classes for Free but well it is as everywhere some will never be willing to learn cuz they just want to have fun or stay brassbound to their views as there won't exist any others.
don't get me wrong I am really noone who sticks to the books as if it would be the holy bible Wink but regardless of which "game" you play you will find at least some rules and a scope to act with/in though you should immo at least know some lil parts about it and start smoothly, get bit by bit secure in your role and you for yourself will have fun and the others who share the rp too.

Thank you all... I'm grateful for your responses!  I agree that we cant follow the books to the letter but I didnt want to find that I was making some terrible mistake!

I do as my Master asks, of course, and agree.. Gor Hub is OOC as far as I'm concerned, though I always greet if someone is close by.  I am red silk and much happier, thank you all, that being in nadu is the correct position.  The Master who spoke to me threw me a little  Embarrassed and even tried to hand me a list of "appropriate" positions.  I did ask if he had read the books (I was being cheeky  Wink) and although he didnt answer directly, he led me to believe he never had.  I did have to remind him that my IM is considered OOC though when he then asked me why I thought I could argue with him, when he was a Master and I, a slave.  I think it is completely his decision how he wants his slaves to kneel of course but its a shame that it seems he didnt really know much about Gor at all.

Well it might be an ooc market but it is a gorean market too. Most of the people who come to your market will surely visit your sim an maybe rp there..so it might be a good and nice attitude to be gentle and greet. To me personally it is not a matter of OOC or IC it is a matter of kindness to greet people who appear. Apart from that, if the market is part of your sim, your rp-enviroment you would stick more to a gorean flair if the slaves kneel and behave as they should. One idea could be: as soon as they appear in silks, they should behave as it fit to their role. If they are dressed ooc it would be visible to everyone and nobody would be annoyed if they don't act slavelike.

This was an answer post to an issue TorMaxim mentioned, cuz unfortunately he deleted his postings it sounds now a bit strange. It was the question if it would be the right behaviour for a cityslave to great Free at the market area even if this is more OOC then IC.

It is stated in several of the books (the later books Norman wrote... so lets say "the second half" of them) that Kajirae were dressed and ordered around always in the way that pleased her master. With one exception... when they were in public.
Then the kajira had to act as "not to scandalize" free women.

This was however only done by considerate masters.

The kajirae were dressed more moderatly when Free Women were expected to be present, and the kajirae were expected NOT to show heat... which Nadu is intended to do.

So it is an interpretation that kajirae kneel in tower when in the presence of a Free Woman.
