As A Guardsman of a City, I had no issue with Hiring myself our for Coin or Favour so long as I knew that my absence would not cause any ill effect to the people of my Homestone.  Part of my Back Story actually involves me being hired out as a guard to a slaver on a Voyage of Acquisition.  I would actually feel an obligation to do so if the person was a Citizen of my homestone, since I would be also acting as a protector to my Citizen.  I would be hesitant to work for another homestone in case the action would be one that harmed my homestone in some way.

As a Commander of the Rarius.  When I needed my men at the ready, I expected them to be at the Ready Straight away, but I also knew that they would also be on assignment as guard to Dignitaries, conducting espionage in other lands, on routine patrol along the boarders of the vast Territories that the City maintains.  Were i to find out that they were being hired out to another Land and were neglecting our Homestone or is some way acting against the Homestone they swore to defend..  I would probably have them reduced in rank at best or at worst, publicly flogged.

As an Admin of a City I feel the rarius should be focused only on the protection of the City.  However I place the control and command of the City Rarius to the Commander.  If He finds it OK that the Men under his Command are working under the table then I will accept that, maybe reluctantly, but still.  This means, however, should anything happen and the Men are not available to protect us due to the fact that they are renting there services out.  it is the Commander that will be called to the carpet.

Its funny this subject has come up now. For sometime now I have been looking for a Merc group that is welcome to rp at BTB sims. To this day I have been unable to find one. My ideal of a BTB Merc group would be one that is part of another community, not one that lives to fight, but fights to live. I have seen and talked to many groups in sl and 90% of the time they are chasing down panthers or outlaws for no reason. This is why I have started my own group hoping to attract more like myself that want to be a Merc as a charachter builder and have fighting as only a  part of th rp. This group will be made up of all castes that need an extra way of making ends meet and providing for thier families.

Very old thread here, but caught my attention...

Back in late '07 I tried a btb merc group... Epic fail due to lack of interest.

In '08 we tried again, different sim... Epic fail due to lack of interest.

I have not seen a single 'btb' merc group, although there are storyline options for some of the larger/wealthier cities to employ a 'company' of men.  Again, I think the reason they don't work is merely due lack of interest.

I'll offer a possible scenario where a merc camp might very well exist and prosper... and when I think about it, the way Minus is setup as a 'buffer' to protect the citizens of Treve is very much the same tactical scenario, but.. here goes..

A city with aspirations for expanding its influence in a region might very well fund the construction of a small encampment.. fortified even.. on the border of its lands to perform a few simple functions...

1.  Border security with neighboring lands that might be hostile, or have potential for it...  Might require a setup where multiple sims are linked together.

2.  Mercenaries might be employed on a regular basis for expeditionary missions beyond the city's region... similar to the Tarnsmen of Treve.  The major difference here, is that the mercenary group doesn't have to make it well-known who is paying their fees, leaving strangers/outsiders guessing who was responsible for their actions/raids, etc.  This might be plausible scenario for a smaller city.

3.  Mercenaries would be viewed as 'expendable' assets to the Free of a city and send them on the suicide missions they would not wish to waste the lives of their own scarlet on.

The only major hurdle again, is actual OOC interest in such a camp.  The only camps that are established that might .. MIGHT be used in this way are your BC camps, but they're not the types of folks that conduct mass raids on a regular basis, though possible with proper storylines behind it.
