Figure I would start a little topic as a place for all the Scarlet or aspiring Scarlet to ask any questions on a variety of topics.  It could be a fun little game of stump the grumpy old warrior. Tongue

Sure, start with a difficult one.  First, not all cities will have all the same as certain places produce certain preferences, like Treve will not have a navy nor will Torvaldsland have large tarn cavalry.
However, he is my attempt at an incomplete list:
- Foot soldiers, your common Rarius.  Although could be sub units within for specialized spear men, crossbow, guardsmen, etc etc.
- Tarnsmen
- High Tharlarion/Kaiila cavalry
- Seige Engineers
- Sailors/Marines
- Scouts/Spies, although not really mentioned in the books just seems common sense.

This covers the major areas, when I think of warriors and different branches I look back to ancient Rome/Greece and similar time periods to see what type of soldiers where produced.  However, I think each city/region is free to have whatever branches best fit with them and the surroundings as long as it is logical.

I will try and hit the major regional areas, and expand beyond just the Scarlet caste and regions for the typical gear/weapons.  Please feel free to correct me or add details as I am sure I will overlook something.

Central/Vosk Region (aka majority of Gor): Short sword, spear, shield, helmet.  A city guardsman often carries a crossbow as more effective using crossbow from wall than a spear or sword.
Tarnsman will usually add either crossbow or short bow.

Torvaldsland: Long Sword, 2-handed axe, ship bow/short bow, and shield.
Plainsmen(Tuchuks, etc): Quiva, lance, bola and bow.
Tahari: Scimitar and lance are the preferred, sometimes complemented with a bow.
Red Savages: Bow, tomahawk, knife, and spear.
Schendi Jungles: Short stabbing spear, short bow, and sword.
Red Hunter (Inuit): Harpoon, spear, club, knife.

Again, these are typical and there is room for exceptions or personal preferences.  Tarl after seeing the deadly effectiveness of the Quiva often carried a few of them and often used the peasant bow(long bow) even though most warriors tend to frown on using it, preferring to be close to enemy for the kill.

What do you consider the primary duties of a Warrior?

True to his warrior caste codes
I cheat with a sweeping statement like that because the codes cover it all *grins wickedly*

How should a warrior behave to his enemies? And how are his enemies determined?

My belief is a Warrior holds true to his homestone and to the core essence of the caste codes.  Many of the codes or sayings of the Scarlet tend to be a bit open ended, perhaps a bit contradictory in some areas as well, but the underlying meaning, the core principles, tend to flow throughout the codes.

Simple answer as to how to determine who is enemy: those that would do your homestone or yourself harm.
How to behave towards an enemy, well that all depends on the character and his personality, as well as the nature of the enemy.  Typically though, warriors would tend to be more straightforward and deal with enemy head on, as well as giving their enemy a base level of respect due to a worthy adversary.

My most simple answer, uphold his own codes and do not waver from them.

That is his one and only duty.

Wouldent that mean he thinks of himself first and his Home Stone second, my belive is a warrior is That because he willingly put his own life on the line for his Home Stone, if he was to uphold his own codes only how would his leaders then know they fully can trust him. Also a warrior should be ready at anytime his leaders call upon him even if it means the warriors death.. right?

Maybe I misunderstod the meaning if so then I am sorry.

Long story short carin, if you knew the codes, you would not question that answer.

A warrior that upholds his codes is always ready to answer to the call no matter the personal cost to himself for it is nto the cost that counts but whether his honour was upheld and his actions judged worthy by those of his caste. If one upholds the codes then of course the Homestone comes first for what greater honour is there than defending ones home.

The term sword brother is used often sometimes abused, what does it really mean?

Wel BTB it means someone who has shed your blood or you have shed his,
however i think most people use it as Shakespeares "Band of Brothers" and means a fellow warrior of your homestone ,
Quote
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother

and to a certain degree i suppose like Nelson`s "Band of Brothers , after the Battle of the Nile he referred to one Captain in a letter

Quote
His activity and zeal are eminently conspicuous even amongst the Band of Brothers - each, as I may have occasion to mention them, must call forth my gratitude and admiration

this i feel is the way most people use it and although not strictly BTB i think it is still a good phrase
