There is a lot one may tell about the world of Gor and about the gorean specials in SL. Also the answer to this question will always be affected by the personal view of everybody.
So I just would like to point it out basically as an overview. If you miss something please feel free to add*smiles

Gor, also known as the Counter-Earth, is a fictitious planet that is supposed to be in the same orbit as Earth, but on the opposite side of the Sun and undetectable to Earth science. Gor has three moons, is smaller than Earth and has a lower gravity field. Gor is a world created by John Norman in a series of 27 novels by now.

“John Norman, pen name of John Frederick Lange, Jr. (born June 3, 1931), is a professor of philosophy, but is better known as the author of the Gor series, which was popular in the 1970s and early 1980s with millions of copies sold, and still has many fans. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University and is a professor at Queens College of the City University of New York in New York City.”(quote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Norman)

Gor is a world of greater and lesser technology. A race of Priest-Kings, insect like creatures, live in the Sardar mountains. They have a technology excelsior to ours. They control and rule as Gods over the planet, but remain unseen and mysterious to the populace. They limit humans to a rudimentary technology, similar to that of the medieval era here on earth. Those caught developing forbidden technologies are subject to the blue Flame Death. If a violator is located by the Priest-Kings a blue flame disintegrates that person.

"The Priest-Kings have transported numerous people from Earth to Gor over a period of thousands of years. They have also restricted Goreans from using many forms of technology but have allowed them to excel in a few limited areas where their technology even surpasses that of Earth. For example, Gorean Physicians have created the Stabilization Serums, a cure for aging. Such a cure would be priceless on Earth.“ (quote:  http://www.gor-now.net/delphius2002/id17.htm)

There are different cultures on Gor, different cities, peoples of the wilderness and there are differences in laws and customs among them. However, there are similarities regarding the roles of men and women as seen on Gor.
Gor is a barbaric world affected through a sense of honour, ruled by steel and a world dominated by men, they are the Masters.
"My father had risen to his feet and had begun to pace the room, and his eyes seemed strangely alive. In time I would come to understand more of what he felt. Indeed, there is a saying on Gor, a saying whose origin is lost in the past of this strange planet, that one who speaks of Home Stones should stand, for matters of honour are here involved, and honour is respected in the barbaric codes of Gor." Tarnsman of Gor, page 27

In this world slavery is a historic and generally accepted course of action. You may find male slaves but those are seldom.
"The master/slave relationship is the institutionalization of dominance and submission. It is, under the enhancements of civilization, the institutionalization of the primitive biological relationship of the human male and female, he the master, she the slave. How lonely is the man who has not yet found his slave; how forlorn is the woman who has not yet found her master." Rogue of Gor, page 240

As to the comment about Romans and history, i totally agree, but lets take that to the next level.

I have often thought and debated the idea that each major city is based on different Earth cultures

Ar is Rome
Cos is Greece
Turia is Byzantium
most of the vosk region cities would be various Germanic and Frankish cultures
The Tahari is northern Africa obviously Arabic and etc.

any other ideas?

Torvsland is Scandanavian... not Hollywood Vikings and there is a huge difference.

Vikings did raid yes.. at one time the coasts of Britain was plagued by vikings looting monasteries..BUT.. vikings where predominately agricultural and traders.  The best example of how this mythology has developed in some peoples minds, would be like defining all English as pirates of the caribbean.

And the history of vikings I know best is that at one time, an area of England was known as Daneland... agricultural viking communities, small villages living on subsistence farming. The war resulting in the Norman invasion 1066, was in part a Viking war.  Normandy in France was named from a derivation of Norseman (Normans).. again predominately farmers.

Now.. from what I keep seeing in SL-GOR people are playing Hollywood Vikings acting as Torvslanders... Now i dont know which is the true reflection  as defined in the books.. Hollywood Raiders or Norsemen (mainly agricultural)

In the books... there was a lot of agriculture took place in certain areas of Torvaldsland... the area being warmed by the southernly updraft brought in by the currents from Thassa.
However... when it was time to fight... the giants of that great land were known to be fierce and without fear.  Some carry it too far... but I've also seen others play the part very well.
