Lax walked the woods of the Red Mountains,  the Trees always relaxed him.  He had spent the better part of an Ahn yelling at the foolish Free women of the Village of Minus, and all it had gotten him was a possible broken knuckle.  In Anger he punched a wall hard, a little too hard, he supposed, but they just didn't understand.  They thought he was just trying to control them, and, of course, he WAS, but he was also trying to save them from themselves.  How Dare they Question Him.  He had sacrificed... fought, spent his own personnel wealth...

A noise drew Lax's attention.  A man walked through the trees... heading towards the village.   Maybe he should have stopped Him, questioned him.  No... They accused Lax of not protecting them.  They want to fight for themselves... a bunch of foolish women... Let them all Die.

a Moment later the alarm sounded. "Well, at least they learned to do that finally"

Lax Drew his Bow and notched an arrow.  His injured hand throbbed as he tested his arch, this was going to make things harder...  He Ran towards the village, Seeing the Stranger giving chase to one of the very women who opposed him.  He Drew back and fired at the man. It deflected off a nearby wall, but it got the attention off the woman.

Lax turned and ran off.  I have to get him out of the village, he thought, before the woman did something stupid again and got them selves...

The pain Ripped into Lax's shoulder.  It seems this Man did not have an issue with a broken hand, his shot landed true.   The Impact brought him down fast, ant the warrior attacked even faster.  three more arrows hit their mark.  Lax fell and rolled to the ground, hoping to  be a smaller target...  two more arrows hit him, proving that strategy a failure.

The Strange Man stood over Lax, took his coin pouch, and ran off.  No words spoken at all.

***********

The pain Racked his body.

Lax wasn't about to just sit there and die, he had to make it to the village.  at the absolute worst he wanted to rub their veiled noses in the fact that he got shot multiple times trying to save them. He dragged himself over the hill, across the bridge, and up to the gate of the village.  Once there, he felt his legs turn to jelly and he fell to the ground

He heard the Lady Green Wendy tell a warrior to help him to the infirmary.  Mal, one of the few Rarius that Lax didn't hate, picked him up and carried lax to the building.

There were questions asked..  Lax, being a general curmudgeon, answered sarcastically, even though blood was being coughed up as he talked.  The Green was assisted by the Baker Jazzy and her sister, the seamstress, Steffi.

Oh!, lax thought to himself, The one I had flogged and her sister... No way I am letting them try and heal me.. I'll be dead for sure.

He Tried to stand, but in his weakened condition, he was easily restrained.  Soon the first arrow was pulled from his chest... the pain was so great Lax couldn't maintain conciousness.  The women did work tirelessly. Wounds were packed with repcloth,  salve was places.  As they worked, the wounded Lax suffered a Seizure, releasing the contents of his bladder and bowels.  It was then a strange man in black entered.

Offering his service, saying he was a Green before he took to the path of the Black, the Killer washed quickly and moved to help.  At almost the same moment Lax was overcome by the injuries.  His heart stopped beating and his chest quit it's constant rise and fall.  Without missing a beat the assassin took control, Heroicly pounding on Laxes Chest, Compressing his ribs and forcing his heart to beat again.  Casting the women out of the room he worked on Lax with the Skill of an expert Green.  Within a few moments, Lax's heart took the cue and carried on it's rhythmic beat.  Once again he was alive, thanks to the actions of a Killer.

The assassin wiped his brow, the Mark of a Hired blade smudged.  He was here, alone with Lax, Just as he wanted to be.  He Drew out His Sword and slowly cut Lax's throat.  Completing his Hired task he plunged a dagger into the newly beating heart of Lax.  Lax. Hunter, Tavern Master and Village Elder of Minus, was dead

Wish I had thought of that on one of my previous marks

The mark on my forehead is not so much a symbol of who I hunt as it is a testament to my skill. I, as a member of the Black Caste, have not earned this mark easily.

Yea a great story with a nice twist at the end, the only thing that drives me bonkers about these kills, is , we NEVER find out who it was who wanted these people dea in the first  place, we could assume that you Pissed off somebody so badly that he/she decided you were surplus to requirements, but there is never , for all us in the crowd watching , and "end" for a better word. love reading about them mind you , and the planning and imagination that goes into them is awesome, but still.....

The Hour Grew late in the village of Minus.  The streets were empty.  No one Noticed the white garbed form as he exited the Boat and walked up the stairs.  a glow of red in his eyes the only colour apparent,  He spoke aloud as though he walked with an unseen companion.

"He is in here.  It appears that he is already dead."  He opens the door to the Infirmary and walks to the fallen shape of Lax, " shall I proceed as planned?  Yes... Yes, as you command, My Master."

The Infirmary seems to explode in a great white light,  and then.. everything fades... Leaving the Infirmary empty again.

The Initiate is looking at me!

Those were the first words lax thought when he opened his eyes in the dark cave near Minus.  His head fell to the side and his eyes opened wide. I dull pain washed over his chest and shoulders. Like he had been the floor of the sandpit in the Paga Den.  He tries to push himself upright but couldn't, some force was holding him down.  He moved to reach for his dagger, but found not only that it was not there, but he was completely naked.

The Initiate started to speak.  At first Lax could not understand the words, then a few came clear.  The Initiate had addressed him, Not by the name he had Chosen more than 40 years ago, Lax, but by his birth name... a name he was sure had died with his village at the hands of the Kur.

"... and NOW after all this, you are what... going to try and kill me?"  the initiate paused.  "I have to say.. i truly Hate you."

"you are hardly the only one" Lax manages to Mutter, a bit breathless.

  The Initiate laughed

"No, I suppose not, but despite MY opinion, or the opinion of everyone who actually seems to meet you,  The Priest Kings Seem to think you have a larger part to play.  and so, by their Grace... you have been granted your life back."

Lax looked at the man, dumbfounded, "What does that mean?  "a larger part to play?" I don't understand?  Do they have a Plan for me?  What am i to do?"

The Initiate stood and moved towards the door.  "Whatever it might be, 'Lax', you will be enlightened when the time is right.  Until them.  Do me, and the Priest Kings the Favour of trying NOT to get yourself killed again.  I have my doubts they will be willing to do you this favour again..."  With that... he was gone.

a few seconds later Lax found he could rise up again.  His clothes were no where to be seen, but he knew he was close to the Village.  The Sun was High in the sky as he left the cave, knowing he would have to walk Naked back to the village.  He knew not how long he was there, nor what was next to happen.  He only knew that whatever the Priest Kings had in store for him, they most likely wanted him dressed.

*pouts*  Your comeback is so much better than mine! I'm jealous. But then again, I am alive, so no need to whine.

At least about this...   Grin

Great read, Lax. You're a writer. Who knew?   Grin
