Right but the decree here says an elder male of the caste not the eldest so ... that's why I'm asking to make sure I'm not making a mistake in thinking I don't need to have this done. At least not right away...

Sorry it might be, because I am not a native english speaker. I thought elder means the oldest male member in a caste. At least that was the way when Sigiher was talking about this issue lately.

Because it's pluralized it makes me think anyone who is older in the caste. But clearly there is confusion and it's not that I'm trying to wriggle out of it (in fact it sounds like fun rp), it's just A. I know I wont be able to get this done right away and B. I'd like to know so that in the future if someone asks me I can say with certainty.

It is the eldest living family member or eldest male caste member who would be a protector if arranged without a document of protection.  Any protectorships not registered with the magistrate for the cost of one silver no longer have any meaning.  Multiple protectorships or verbal protections have no meaning either.  From this point forward all protectorships are legal contracts that must be registered with the magistrate or will not be held as legal.

However Sig is as of now The elder Male of the Blue Caste in Treve.. ergo He would be your protector if you do not have family members

Hmm perhaps I am wrong, but the way it reads to me says that you dont need a contract if it is your family member or the head of your caste in the case of those who have no family, which means to me only if you have someone outside of your caste and outside of your family as your protector do you need the contract.

a woman who has a male family member or a woman who has an elder male caste member can use those people without writing out a contract of protection.  If a woman wishes to have a protector who is not those two people and one of those people exist then simply asking them would be good form.  The reason I am stating they do not have to do a protection contract is because quite simply it is every man's role in Treve who swears to the homestone to protect the Free of the city including the FW.  Protectors in other words have been perhaps overdone in the past verbally.  This is in effect a way to bring this issue to conclusion without having multiple men as protectors or having protectors changed like new hats or out of fashion etc.  Those women who wish to enter the protection contract realize that they are giving the head of household power to the man and her property, her action, everything she does, who she companions will be under the providence of that man who signed the contract with her.  Any other protections that are not family members or elder male caste members are undone and will not be validated or followed or legal.  Thank you again for the response and questions.

Yes, again, I think it is important to make it clear what 'protector' means in this context.  I am Snapper's protector.  I have access to her property, her slaves, her house, and every thing she does.  Mainly the point is that this was an act of profound trust no her part.  She trusts me to not take advantage. 

By example, I am NOT Bella's protector, and in fact, IC, Bella and Mal are not particualry close, she is just another lady of the city.  But recently a man of Treve threatened her with a collar and rape simply because he had her bound and alone in the sewers during a raid.  When Mal heard of this he flew off the handle, and is just livid.  I am rarius, and an officer of Treve.  Warriors are the champions of every single FW in the city, and will not tolerate this type of action.  A major role of all warriors is to protect and preserve the freedom of ALL the ladies of our homestone.

'Protector' in the sense being discussed here is an RP theme, and not being a bodyguard.

Does the contract (Protection) end when the FW gets FC'ed? I would assume for example, than Snapper would need Malcomb's permission to FC Colin, but that once the companionship is done he is no longer her protector--is that correct?

Protection contracts can have stipulations concerning FC's or the protectors can alter the contract prior to the FC Contract, or the FC himself can bring it before the protector and ask to end the contract when the FC occurs, and as it should
