On most Gor SIMs the use of mini-map and/or radar is banned... and this for good reason.
Most of "invalid" RPs other than IM calls for help I wittness are due to the use of radar and mini-map.

OK the mini-map is there... and yes, I have it open most of the time. It is a nice tool to see "where the action" is and where I can probably find someone to RP with. That's how I make use of the mini-map... but quickly this can turn into "God mode roleplay" if you are not careful.

If you are on a "rescue" mission... do yourself a favor and do not use the mini-map.
If you search for someone... search... yes walk around, preferably in 1st person view and and look at things, try to walk into buildings, peer around corners. Make it lively. AND do not forget to also describe those actions in chat. As this will be proof for anyone doubting you "RPed" the search... you can show it with that.
That makes your experience more "realistic"... and... there is a chance that you do NOT find the captive that you were looking for.

Capture RP can be a lot of fun and a hell lot of good RP... so give the captor and the captive some time to RP it. Nothing is worse than having a captive freed after just about 10 minutes. If you never had to treat, interrogate or simply talk to a captive... you have missed a lot of fun.
And if you are rescued out of a "good" captivity just after a few minutes... you are robbed of some of the best RP you might get on Gor.

Yes, getting captured can be realy scary. But get real... no one wants to enslave you, if you don't comply to it, no one will kill you, no one will mutilate you... (well except some realy few sick a........., but those you will not RP with most likely anyway).
You either will be given the chance to escape, or traded in for some "RP goods", or set free after some time... no one likes to destroy your RP.
Play together and have fun... that also is true for capture RP.

Well, a couple of months ago i was held captive by panthers on Caithris. I managed to get free, i really paniced... i did not know how to get out of the camp. After i was out of the camp, i lost my way cause i did not know this land. I was naked, alone, collared, my heart was pounding - that was very, very exciting. I even ran the wrong direction while fleeing... If me or the panthers had used Mini-Map, nothing of this all could have happend.
So for me, using the Mini-Map is betraying myself and others of a maybe nice RP.

((Um, sorry for the terrible english... *sighs*))

Sylvie,

You've given me inspiration. It never would have occurred to me *not* to use the mini-map. Its just something I do automatically.   Undecided

Your description of running, confused and tired through an unknown land sounds like a thrilling experience. It reminds me of the first time I wandered into Aria and ran into a Panther Camp. Even with the mini-map on, I had no idea where I was or where it was safe to go! I found a Panther girl, abandoned and tied up and knelt, undecided about whether to free her or to claim her as my own. It turned out to be something of an ambush (cunning urts!). I ran and ran, loosing arrows and fell off a cliff into the water, taking more damage. I swam for a ways, not knowing where I was going, and came to a small landing. I tried to get out of the water only to find that the landing was booby trapped and I took more damage. Five minutes later, when I finally found a small fishing jetty and emerged from the water, I felt like I had been put through the wringer!  Smiley

Nearly the whole experience was in first person mode, which precludes the use of mini-map.

"To be a man is... to be responsible. It is to feel shame at the sight of what seems to be unmerited misery. It is to take pride in a victory won by one's comrades. It is to feel, when setting one's stone, that one is contributing to the building of the world." Antoine de Saint-Exupery

When in an ugly situation (if I see it coming) I will turn off my minimap and at the same time switch into Mouselook / 1st Person view.

This forces me to turn and "look" if I want to see what's going on behind my back... and it realy confuses me when it comes to directions *g*
I'm 100% with Sylvie here.
