I find myself drawn to this topic as i try to keep myself and other held to a very BTB standard, but i find myself falling into the SL-gor cracks nowadays. SOME i do intentionally like in the case of the master with the slaves nose and ear piercing, with rp background to it. I recently came into a very awkward spot when my BTB nature was questioned due to my tattoos and stretched ears. As i explained to them I have been in gor on sl close to 5 years now yes yes i saw the days where buildings had no rooftops and the weapons seemed like nerf guns lmao. But i digress i explained to them that honestly after 5 years not every rp everyday is superb so when i find a rp i deeply enjoyed i tend to keep a memory of it. In this case back when i was a Semris Wraith Outlaw Wink Carter when you an i first met, I was captured by panthers while traveling and for 2 to 2 1/2 hours rl time PAINSTAKINGLY and very detailed tortured by being pricked with needles and stick bush prickers covered in ink by 3 panthers. Not to mention the piercing and stretching of my ears, to immasculate me, so that when i returned to "society" i would most likely be collared or treated as less than a man. A truely thought out and thorough rp SO i keep the piercing and tattoos, same as my wraith brand, a missing finger, and a notched ear i have collected on my rp journey. Smiley ty for read.

We all learn by watching and observing role models. initially.

You see a bunch of guys stood in black, tats all over them, more weapons strapped to their back than an Egyptian donkey.. you will follow and assume thats the gorean attributes and dress sense.

You see FW calling slaves.. sweetie, little one.. handing out candy like it was a petting zoo to the cutsey wutsey little pigmie goat.. then you assume thats what the interaction is between FW and slaves...

Then you meet somebody.. you respect them, you appreciate their knowledge, you understand why they do what they do and you learn.

Stay true to yourself and your understanding of GOR.....act as a role model and mentor to those who seek your input.

or be an arsehole.. criticise people for getting it wrong, be abusive, jump in their IM's and call them Mickey Mouse and guess what.. they wont take a blind bit of notice of you.

And THIS is why I read the forums.  Carter, I learned my lesson today and after reading this .. I will just watch and learn until I get the Gorean role of a Free Woman down pat.

Hail Treve!

Cheers,

Very eloquent, and I understand what you are saying.  For me though, I pay less attention to how the avatars appear than i do to behavior...

My grey area is when it comes to slaves and my behavior around them.  I know in the books, FW were supposedly extremely jealous of slaves, and their ability to be relatively free to fawn over men.  Therefore FW were known to be cruel and harsh to slaves.

I can't bring myself to do this very well, unless I've set up this type of relationship beforehand in agreement with that slave.  In general, i just treat them as lesser fortunate than myself, and pity them to an extent, while tolerating their slutty behavior.

There are so many slaves out there however, that I feel the need to push the envelope sometimes, just to create some interesting rp.  How does everyone feel about the horrid FW who never lets an opportunity pass to pester some unsuspecting slave?

I think there is room for nice free women and horrid free women in Gor.
The horrid free woman is however frowned upon

Quote from: Witness of Gor
I turned my head a little and saw her following the guard,
he whose whip I had first kissed, from the area. He did not
even look back at her. Doubtless I should have rejoiced at
this development, facilitating as it did my escape from what
might have been a most unpleasant situation. How fortunate
that he, in the line of his duty, he so impatient and efficient,
had recalled to her the presumed itinerary of her schedule. I
was pleased that this, doubtless by some fortuitous
coincidence, had occurred to him. But I had felt, too, a
sudden uncontrollable wave of hatred and jealousy for her,
she being permitted to follow him as she did. She followed
him quickly enough, and meekly enough, I thought. This
might have been noted, too, by the guards.
The woman with her accompanied her.
Then they were gone.
"I wonder what she would look like on a block," said one of
the guards. "Not bad, I would guess," said another.
"Do you
think she could dance?" asked another. "Yes," said another.
"It is instinctive in a woman," said another. "Certainly she
could be taught," said another. "She needs a collar, and a
taste of the whip," said another. "That is what they all need,"
said another, "a collar, and a taste of the whip."
Then the guards looked at me.
I knelt before them as well as I could.
"Do not mind what she said," said one of the guards.
"No," said another.
"You are beautiful," said another.
"We will decide who is beautiful and who is not," said
another.
"And you are beautiful, very beautiful," said another.
"Yes," said another.
"May I speak?" I asked.
"No," I was told.
"We know her," said one of the guards.
"She was abandoned by her intended companion, who had
become enamored with a lovely Earth-girl slave," said
another.
Perhaps I should not have been, but I was pleased to hear
this. Her projected companion had preferred one such as I, an
Earth-girl slave, to one such as she! Inferior goods, indeed!
I wondered if the slave had simply been taken, or
purchased, by the fellow, whether she wished it or not, or if
she had smiled, and posed, and, finding him of great interest,
had proffered herself as a slave, promising him delights
beyond the interests, or ken, of a free woman.

She attracts attention of men, because of her jealousy. Such shows passion, and passion should be in the collar.

I haven't read Witness of Gor, but just taking it in the context you presented, it seems that with all the frowned upon behavior the free woman exhibited, she was not collared.  Sure, they spoke of collaring her, but did any of them do the deed?  Again, I haven't read this particular book, so I don't know if it happened later on.

Another such instance happened in Marauders of Gor.  Bera's actions were much frowned upon by the men, but did any of them collar her?  No!  She ended up in a collar because of a Kur, and the Blue Tooth interpreted it as legitimate as if it had been done by a human.  I think people overlook that free woman were valued in Gorean society, so much so that few would gainsay them when they spoke.

She was not mentioned further. She would not be collared for this, neither did Bera or others. But that its never wise to attract attention of men in Gor as woman. And if you start kicking slaves around, you do get a lot of attention.

The problem is that everyone wants to be noticed. We all want an angle. There was a scene in a sim I was playing in a short time ago where 5 barbarians were all having a chat in English and all were free!! It was very amusing for me then to be told its ungorean being an unescorted free woman *sniggers* But anyway. I try not to get cross now about the things that are probably unlikely because we all want to be special, we all want our fun and we all deserve to enjoy our online time and follow our stories. So I do let a lot of things pass now that used to make me roll my eyes and grit my teeth.
Follow the sim rules is the key, as for the rest live and let live or pick another sim, there's hundreds of them.

Everything else is pretty much up for interpretation even 28 books later....

It's 29 books now, the last book is Kur of Gor, which is what I am currently working on, it's the only book that I have managed to get past chapter 5 on lol

As for creative license and gray areas, there's a lot of that in the books, as Rayzor stated, healers weren't mentioned in the books, however, we have to assume that there was, I'm pretty sure that some Northerners were southerners that studied the Green Caste. Point is, there are a lot of assumptions that we as the Role-playing Goreans have to make using as much information from the books as we can. Marauders doesn't mention much about free women in the north, in fact, there are only three well described northern FW's, Aegelfu, Bera, and Hilda the Haughty, in the end, the clothing of these women points to the Norse/viking style of clothing, right down to the chain brooches and black shoes, and oh yes, this topic did come up in the Tyr's Fist group, FW's did wear stockings. Aegelfu wore woolen stockings and Hilda wore Silken. Here's the interesting part, in other books, where the FW's are mentioned, they are all from the south and it's mentioned that you would never put such a sensuous fabric such as silk, on the skin of an FW...*scratches head* Seems the Northern women would think otherwise...

Point is, we can only go by what we have to go on from the books and look at the similarities of RL Cultures, for example, Red Savages could easily be followed by the Native Americans, the Torvies resemble Norse/Viking, the bigger cities of the south could be related to the chivalrous medieval times (To a point, I've heard many ways to describe a lot of the southern villages, such as a cross between medieval England, Sparta and the chastity of the American 1930's where women were virgins till they were married) and the Tahari would be the wandering nomads of the eastern deserts, just to name a few...

So to end this rant, as some of you have stated, it's up to us how we want to RP our characters, whether it be man, woman, or slave, within the acceptable confines and rules of the books that were already set out, there will be a lot of gray areas, simply because, not all the cities followed the same rules, each has their own twists, turns and interpretations of what is acceptable behavior, even in the books. As someone mentioned, if it was all the same, nobody would want to be around as it would get boring...
