That's me... I think

If you want to play a great warrior, you need only a few things:

Black leather pants, very important!
Then some great tatoos, some cool boots (leather of course) and maybe a evil looking mask.
And forget the weather and the nature - if you roleplay at the desert or in the middle of a snowstorm - run around always with naked upper part of your body.

A few days ago somebody told me a strange thing:
He said that the men at gor wear TUNICS and SANDALS!

This is unbelievable, isn't it?

It is Wink

As I was of the warriors, some day a outlaw was laying down to my feet. He refused the bindings, because he won't take orders from a "Funny man wearing Sandals at Gor". This was unbelievable!

The regional weather issue.. hm, sure, most of the people just ignore the differences. Anyways I would be way more happy to see more people wearing clothes which better fit into what the theme of Gor and the age is: Roman, Greek and Spartian style.

Not post modern Gothic and Evil Vampire stuff. *sighs*

But that's not my business to deal with anymore Wink

hmm,

perhaps Zeus is now becomming expert for male silks for a desert surrounding? How to prevent from a sunburn???   Tongue

But to be honest, i feel, the dresscode for men got better during the last weeks in SL Gor. Some warrior really wear red things and even shirts!

But sti9ll most slaves wear silks all the day. The camisks and tunics, described in nearly all of the books are rarely seen. A shame, the look this cute.

And what to do when travelling to a cold area? What can my girl wear? Bare feet and a silk? And I buy a new one, when the old one in "damaged"?
I saw silks with fur .. but is that enough to kees my girl alive or even warm?
Questions after questions!

But what I finally found are panther clothes, wich do not look like riven fur-bikinis
smiles to suca*

To be dressed properly and nice in Gor is not this easy!!

What we're stuck with on SL Gor is a preponderance of tanned, tattoed, longhaired characters in Goth-chic costumes wearing goaties and carrying bows.  Whereas what we should have are mostly clean-skinned men dressed in roman T-tunics, sandles, grecian helmets and bearing large round shields, short swords and spears. When I wore my 300-styled leather codpiece, red cape, sandles and spartan helmet to what was supposedly a hard-core Gorean city the other day I was attacked for my choice of style by one of the more prominant Free Women there. Curious, I thought, given that the costume I wore was almost exactly what the guy is wearing on the cover of "Slave Girl of Gor."

Its sad really and I lament how far we've strayed both architecturally and costume wise from the novels. That said, its important to understand that fashion will always exist and inevitably it evolves and changes. To give you some idea of just how relevant and important fashion is to someone from a medieval world, consider these two examples:

i) Samurai under the Ashikaga Shoguns often became bankrupt because the responsibilities of the father were passed the eldest son but the land/income was split evenly between all the sons.   The eldest son had to appear rich (wear the right clothes, go to the right theatres, sponsor artists) to gain the right kind of influence at court and to attract the right kinds of followers. Often they would find themselves marrying merchant's daughters - who exchanged huge dowries for a noble name.

ii) Burgundian Dukes were some of the most conspicuous consumers in medieval times - wearing jewel encrusted robes and sponsoring mausaleums, fighting orders and cathedrals. They'd tax their free towns to the hilt and then crush them ruthlessly when the rose up in revolt, looting and pillaging them. After the revolt had been settled, they'd cynically sell the town its rights back at exhorbitant rates. Their rights firmly secured again by treaty, the town bergers would slowly gain more and more confidence until they thought it time to throw off the yoke of their feudal overlords. And thus the cycle would begin again.

Medieval war, it seems, was as much driven by the costly demands of fashion as by religion or politics.

So what can we do about it? What should we do about it?

Create demand.

Spend money on the arts - the way it was done in medieval and classical times. Sponsor tournaments with prizes of authentic costume and armour rather than money. Ask for custom costumes to be made for you and then let the maker sell them two weeks later when the demand has risen. Make authentic costumes and freely give them to your guardsmen to wear them as uniforms.

Slowly but surely, fashion can be shaped and directed.  Grin

Greetings Master and Mistresses
Tal brother zeus..giggles (beside that you are not my brother, but i wasnt able to resist gg )

I agree to all what you wrote here. The simple fact in my case is, i dont have any tunic i could wear..i would of course, when wandering around in the desert. I also would wear a cloak in that case, if i would find a proper one. The ones i have are too pretty to be worn in the desert or at work.

I saw some Panther ( Torvis ) in the desert who were leaving to Hulneth, You remember the cold snowy place in the north. And the cool thing was, they changed their dress to a real winter looking dress with no bare skin. I like when ppl try to adapt to these things.

And i also know some warriors, who wear some red thing all the time. Not all over, but it is to see.

My opinion is, that it is getting better the last time. Well, Panthers in High Heels ( SSS ), Outlaw Woman ( args ) with Vampire/Gothic Look or much bare Skin and warriors with naked upper body are seen also. ( and also in the bakah camp, just to say it .-p )

And i agree to Master Kaile, to create an Uniform and to give it for free to your warriors is a very good way to implement a style. And if it is well made, others will want something like that too. Another way to make following business AND to spread the style to more places.

* Guru Randwick shrugs in consternation: There is such an uniform! And it would be available from our 1st Sword ...
The trouble is, we still do not have real guards. It's a project we run since the beginning with the sims. I don't know the real reason, but it it is not easy to find RPers doing this job, which has so much potentials in it, due to my opinion.

* Guru Randwick shrugs again, then lights a cigarrette.

I agree in many of your sayings in your post, Kaile. There are mainly two things I would want to name here to consider:

  • You seem to have profound, knowledge oft he middle ages history. I do appreciate this very much, even more as it is one of my passions to grab in those times history, aswell. But, I guess, the spectrum of most of gorean RPers is not focussed on the middle age. So I do agree: We should create demand. The question is: How? I am against the installing of any stores selling goods, even selling excluively gorean stuff. The only exceptions I made in Sand Sleen are the two stores of Arminius and andera, the two main builders of the sims, as a gift to thank them. Stores produce lag on one hand, on the other hand they are hot spots to produce dramas, (like not worn tags, disturbing others etc., etc.; - I went thru this when I was a guard in Ketora.) So I can create demands by ordering things for my sims. (F.e.: I do this with the HTS, where I try to give the creators some input, also thru this blog, even.)
  • Second point is: Due to gorean habits, following the novels, a Kajira/Kajirus has no goods ... Now this is not the fact in SL, mostly female RPers are real department stores, I guess Harrods or Wallmart would go green with envy if they would go thru some RPers inventory ...  Grin

Nevertheless: I think we should offer some common real fgorean stuff, mainly clothings for free, to give the newcomers a chance to be decently dressed. We have a chest in the scribery which offers such free stuff. Maybe we should set such a chest at each entry point.

I do have two questions Master.

1) Does everyone know where to get this uniform ? I am not a warrior of course, but i heard the first time about that. And i am well informed normally..smiles

2) Its a problem on almost every sim. The Role of a warrior includes so much of potential if played close to the books. But that is the problem. Most RPler dont have the patience or interest to learn. You may say now, well, these ppl i dont want to be here and i would agree to that.
In my opinion its the duty of the City Commander to get his guards. I dont know if he is trying, and how if he is. But that would be his task.

Well Master, then you would have the result that many would come there, gets the clothes and leave.

I would suggest to place an Info there about sand sleen is looking for warriors. Training and Clothes and Food included, use of city kajirae also. Something like that. And if they are Guards, then they recieve their uniforms.

Hm, i've met one - Thom Waechter - who played this role very well. He saw a woman (me) attacked by an outlaw (from Schendi) and came to protect me. But he did not wear that uniform. I know, there is one - we talked about this weeks ago Guru - but do all of them know, that there IS an uniform?

We have Thom, Xaver and Traumi right now, that I know off.
Still on the board as "1st Guard" I can see Edge... who I never see in Sleen... only in Uthar. So there might be a change in place.

Your crinkly, attractive lums and bumps are far to slim to hide all of it! If you would want to hide it behind your wonderful body, umm I am not certain if I would find you as attractive as you are right now!  Tongue  Wink
