I have always perceived Treve and its description as being closely aligned to Sparta

1. A warlike civilisation, constantly training, preparing, testing itself and its men for war

2. Very few could claim Spartan Citizenship..and only a man who at the age of 21, if he had survived the training of becoming a warrior, would be be granted citizenship.

3. Sparta was the only country/state that had a full time miltary presence and a culture driving the behaviour of its men and also, very importantly, its women

4. Suppressing and controlling territorites around itself... Sparta had only 10,000 warriors, but it controlled and enslaved 100,000's of people to farm and provide food for its people. It once killed 3,000 slaves as a show of its power and ruthless oppression of those not of Sparta

5. It had a deep suspicion of strangers and outsiders.. it was rare for other greeks to be allowed entry or visit the territories of Sparta

6. So feared and ruthless was it reputation.. that when several Spartan Warriors surrendered in battle, the belief and mythology of the supremecy of Spartan warriors was undermined to the extent that some historians say this was the start of its decline.

7. Famed for its warriors.. it was paid handsomely by other states to act as mercenaries.. training, guiding, fighting for other greek and foreign countries..including Rome.

8. Spartan women are unique.. the women enjoyed a status, power, and respect that was unknown in the rest of the classical world. They controlled their own properties, as well as the properties of male relatives who were away with the army. Spartan women rarely married before the age of 20, and unlike Athenian women who wore heavy, concealing clothes and were rarely seen outside the house, Spartan women wore short dresses and went where they pleased.

So I can see many comparisons to Treve and Sparta and just to emphasise and add some clarity to perhaps how Treve Women would act

Quote
Sayings of Spartan Women:

Because Damatria heard that her son was a coward and not worthy of her, she killed him when he arrived. This is the epigram about her: His mother killed Damatrius who broke the laws, She a Spartan lady, he a Spartan Youth.

As a woman was burying her son, a shabby old woman came up to her and said, "You poor woman, what a misfortune!" "No, by the two goddesses, what a good fortune," she replied, "because I bore him so that he might die for Sparta, and that is what has happened for me."

Another Spartan woman killed her son, who had deserted his post because he was unworthy of Sparta. She declared: "He was not my offspring for I did not bear one unworthy of Sparta."

Another, hearing that her son had fallen at his post, said: "Let the cowards be mourned. I, however, bury you without a tear, my son and Sparta's."

and of course the famous act of a Spartan Mother to her son and the words spoken to him when giving him his first shield

With it or on it.... "With it = victorious hero; on it = fallen hero; without it = coward."

Spartan women when given birth, If the child was to be thought of as weak, would be removed and taken to a mountain and left to die.
It wasnt seen as crual but as a way to breed healthy Spartan men.
I agree with you 100% Carter. I see alot of Spartan ways in Gor as well...

Queen Gorgo: Spartan!
King Leonidas: Yes, my lady?
Queen Gorgo: Come back with your shield, or on it.
King Leonidas: Yes, my lady.

In other words...come back carrying it or dead being carried on it.

Ohh I have to add this quote

Messenger: What makes this woman think she can speak among men?
Queen Gorgo: Because only Spartan women give birth to real men.

Persian General Slaughtered: Spartans, lay down your weapons.
[a spear flies out and impales him through the chest, and he falls out of the saddle, dead]
King Leonidas: Persians! Come and get them!

"In War." The inscription along with the name of the Spartan who died in combat. Spartans only got gravestones if they died in combat. Women got them if they died during child birth.

There are so many fabulous quotes that would work in Gor. Reading the books of Gor you can also see that John Norman used Sparta as an example.

Yes, the "Trevan Codes" was my concern as well and I was trying to find those Treve related Warrior quotes. I'll try to fix something together mainly using snippets from the books, so the codes will be open to interpretation... So we could get our own tangible "Trevan Warrior Codes" perhaps instead of those (for me) dreadful 100 aphorisms that are in our library. Perhaps looking into Spartan ethos might help alot as well.

People are welcome to help with more quotations (I got about 50 of them now, and even more  when adding the Treve ones). And I'll put the final work up for review on the forums then.

I will not try to paraphrase or express things differently than how they were in the books, cause I don't want to "make up" stuff. I want them to have references and citations towards the books.

This is the work I have so far... feedback from others on these "Trevan Warrior Codes" are appreciated. Wink
Literal quotations are between parantheses ("") - Others are paraphrased from out of the books, often done so to reflect the Trevan ethos.

Quote
You hold in your hands the writings of the Trevan
Warrior Codes, "something which, if taken
literally would encourage it's believers to take
not the slightest or most sane precaution for his
safety." None but Warriors would understand. –
Tarnsman of Gor chapter 3.

Warrior of Treve, do not extend these codes too
much to those who do not share your Home Stone.
For they are not as mighty as the Trevan Warriors,
and by excluding them from our codes, we shall
intimidate and keep power over them. - Trevan
Ethos.

1. "Loyalty to the Ubar and the Home Stone." –
Tarnsman of Gor chapter 3.

2. "Accept or slay those women who sumbit to you."
"Unless the woman is of Trevan blood, the refusal
of her submittance will be answered with a stigma
of dishonor - but still free." - Players of Gor,

challenge him for it by the weapon of his choice."

20. "The only honourable reply to a challenge" of
fellow Trevans "is to accept it promptly.” -
Tarnsman of Gor, chapter 6. & Trevan Ethos
(( This quote does -NOT- refer to duels. If you find a Warrior
offends your honor, just draw your blade and take him down.
This quote refers to 'challenges' in general - just to be a

“The same,as that which depresses no scale but is
weightier than gold.”
“Honor” – Vagabonds of Gor, chapter 28.

There are more words and text within these Trevan
Warrior Codes. Yet few stand out as clearly as the
ones you've just read.

Never forget, you're a Trevan. Supress and
control the rest of Gor and their inferior ways.

(( Extra note: These codes are everything and nothing for a Warrior.
What does this mean? No Warrior is expected to follow these codes literally and rigorously.
Honor has many voices and many songs. Just know that within these codes you can find your honor, as a Warrior.
Even if sometimes you've to disregard them for the 'greater' honor in general or because of personal believes and your
own individuality, as what you might find honorable or not.))

Anarch where you said "Ar doesnt recognize them for example". Before I joine dup with Treve Ar had tried to recruit me, because I am awesome, and the Ubar himself gave he a copy of the 100 aphorisms as he tried to get me to join the scarlets there. So I do not believe that Ar does not follow them.

It matters little if Ar would recognize em or not. But I remember having a talk about the Warrior Codes with Crimson Spear. People brought up the 100 aphorisms and there it was Dyce and others, that at that point were RPing nothing more than being a Red Caste academy, said that those were not BtB. So I really doubt they'd hand them out in Imperial Ar unless the guy changed opinion.

Just to post one of the logs I can find from those days:

Quote
[2010/07/14 19:12]  Dyce Boucher: Benevolence is weak! Conan once said it truly! Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of the women! But, that has more to do with being a Man than honor!
[2010/07/14 19:14]  Anarch Allegiere: If benevolence is weak, what about the following quote?
[2010/07/14 19:14]  Anarch Allegiere: Aphorism 58 - A Warrior and an Initiate approached a stream, where they saw a lowly peasant child, who had been gathering tarsk dung for his family's cookfire. The child could not cross the stream, as rain had swollen it. Without a word the Warrior lifted the child and carried him across the stream, then set him down and continued upon his way. After the two travellers had walked for half an ahn, and gone over a pasang, the Initiate spoke:
[2010/07/14 19:14]  Anarch Allegiere: "How could you, a noble Warrior, carry a filthy unwashed peasant in your arms? He stank of dung." To which the Warrior replied: "Are you still carrying that peasant child? I myself set him down beside the stream, over half an ahn ago."
[2010/07/14 19:14]  Dyce Boucher: That is not a quote. There is only one quoted aphorism in the novels.
[2010/07/14 19:14]  Dyce Boucher: And that is the 97th Aphorism, which is honor.

Either way... my old days of taking my Warrior training very serious aside. I don't care for what Imperial Ar or doesn't do. Most people ... that look into these things will agree that the 100 aphorisms are not BtB.
