I have a couple issues against voice in combat, first of all, not everyone is comfortable in using voice for one reason or the other. For me, i avoid using voice, since it helps me to separate the waters, i have experienced voice to be the first step towards deeper involvement. On the other hand, you are right, people did communicate in the battle field, but the shouts could be heard by the other side as well, which doesn't happen when you use skype or any other program.  just my 2 cents
