Recently it has come to me that some of the Warriors of Treve have Left, stating that the officers treated our Warriors like Soldiers, they were here to play and have fun.

It took me several Hours to come to the thought that this statement, WASN'T meant as a Complimentary thing...

Now I have been mulling over this for a good week, considering how *I* play my role, and how I relate that play to others.

I am Treve's Commander.  One of two.  But I wasn't always, I started as a Guardsman, walking the Docks of Telnus.  Then I was a Lieutenant, and Pushed forward Training exercises and worked to better my team.  Then i became a Captain, where i organized Raids and Planed strategy for combat.  Then after a time, i was promoted to the Rank of Commander.  None of this is Background Story... this is all done in RP.  I rose through the Ranks by putting my Character through its paces and becoming the role i have.

To me My Character IS a Soldier, as much as he is a Warrior of Treve... He trains, he Learns, He Studies.  His Duty is the protection and betterment of his Homestone.  I Made that Choice to Play a Warrior, a man in an Organized Combat Group.  If My Ubar tells me to do something, I Obeyed.  If My Subordinates are given an Order i expected the same result from them.  I DO act on my own at times, but the Character is still a warrior and follows his Duty.

My question is, Do others Play their role in such a fashion?  If you are going to Play a Scribe, Don't you think you should Write and read?  if you are going to play a Physician, Shouldn't you heal?  IF you are a Warrior, do you not want to take the part and BE a Warrior?

Tarl Cabot Trained under his Master at Arms, Older Tarl For MONTHS before he joined his Caste.  Why aren't we training?  And it's not like you lack options, you can go out and become a Merc... or an Assassin... of course the Training we Red caste ask are NOTHING compared to the training you would have to go through as a black...

I am not trying to say we are not here for fun, but, at least to me, the fun also comes in to playing the role i have chosen to play, and immersing myself into the role a Little.

I look forward to hearing thoughts on this.

I think it would be how much room a person is left to make their character unique.  If you drive everyone who trains as a warrior to be from the same mold, no real individuality, then it is no longer fun, and as such, why should a person stay?   I don't mind metered combat, and know the need for practice, but sometimes its good to have some down time where you don't have to.

Also, there is a difference between a warrior and a soldier.   Cal, you would very much be seen as a warrior because you do those things of your own free will, but once the thought goes to 'I am doing this because I HAVE TO' the person ceases to be a warrior and becomes a soldier.

A warrior is a state of mind, way to live ones life.

Soldier is an occupation.

Best in luck with the problem and hope its just a small bump for you guys.

As a Trevan warrior i have to say I have not found my duties to be onerous.  I participate in raids, some training and sometimes just standing guard duty on the docks of Minus.  Training and raids are fun.  Lots of action and such, gaurd duty some might find dull, but it is necessary.  Would I rather be furring a beautiful slave?  Sure, who wouldn't, but as a warrior I have a duty to perform.  BTW, when standing gaurd, you can still rp with those who walk by.
I agree with Commander Caliway, if you choose to play a part, then play it.  Thats the point and the fun of roleplaying.

I was famous for dragging a bond with me when I had to stand guard duty.  I agree, it sucks, but there are ways to alleviate the boredom without getting in much trouble, if any.

My question is, Do others Play their role in such a fashion?  If you are going to Play a Scribe, Don't you think you should Write and read?

Yup

As a scribe I:

Write private slave papers
manumissions
FC contracts
write for the Tribune (must do that soon)
Protector Contracts
Write FC ceremonies
and I currently seal slave papers for -every single- city slave.

On top of that I have Lina and her court battles Wink

Would I rather not have to deal with all those Notecards?  Sure!   But it's my choice to play a scribe rather than a peasant and I get the plush apartment in Treve as compensation Cheesy

Indeed, there are ways to liven up what some would consider dull duty.  Now keep in mind, I was not assigned the duty by an officer, but to be a warrior in my mind requires you to stand guard from time to time.  I will usually engage any strangers that come in, something a sentry/guard would do.  If the sim is quiet and no one is around I can alway clean up my inventor, Priest Kings know it needs it....
Like the idea of dragging a kajira along, sounds like a good way to make the duty lighter.  Wink

I do.

I often end up doing Slave Exams even when I would rather be doing something else.  I was (prior to this last uh..."incident") responding to calls for a Physician in Minus.  You can ask Betony, because I file my paperwork for every single thing that I do...I've given her so much work recently!

The only thing that does sometimes get on my nerves is the feeling that people seem to have that I should drop everything I'm doing and come at a moment's notice to do a...checkup.  I'll do it for an emergency, but how about making an appointment with me to get a slave exam or a wellness checkup done?  Makes my life much easier.

I started out as a grunt in Port Kar, and spent months standing guard, working my way up the ranks, much like Caliway, until I became Commander of the warriors there.   I did that job for several months, until I decided I needed a break.   When I brought Pax the Warrior back into RP, I went to Treve, for many reasons.  I found the rp there fun and challenging, even though I was a grunt again.  I wanted it that way, I was tired of being in a leadership position and didn't want others depending on me for that.

Being a warrior in rp is different than if you were one in real life.   I found that as commander of a group of diverse guys, you can't just issue orders and expect them to be followed.  Roleplay doesn't work that way.  Most times the person behind the avi will be sitting there deciding if the order is a good one, and whether or not he wants to do it.   If he doesn't, he'll either log out or go find something else to do.

Unless you make every warrior agree to a contract of sorts, where they agree to follow orders from the commanders or else they can't be a warrior of Treve, you will get disagreement and guys who don't go along with what you want.  It's more like war by committee, in some respects, because it's easier to see the decisions being made, most of the times the guys are in on what's going on from the beginning, so they can have input and second guess your decisions.   Makes it hard to give orders.

Add to that the varying views on how Gor should be played, and definitions of what BTB is, and how warriors should act, blah, blah, blah, and it makes it very tough.

Warriors come and go on every sim.  I've seen lots of guys come and go just in my short time in Treve.   It happens.  If you are really concerned, contact the ones who've left and find out why.

As for me, I'm kind of retiring Pax again for awhile.  I've run out of steam with him for now, plus I really hate panther rp, which seems to me to be what is mostly happening with Treve currently.  No one else cares for raids.

@Cal:  Yes.  As a physician in training, my job is to heal and learn and then heal some more.  Tending to my studies (doing so in character) and then actually spending time out of character (meaning I read up on Gorean medicine via external websites and the like) means I am a committed role player.  If I was not interested in doing something, or at minimum, giving some effort to develop my character, I would not even bother.  The High Caste characters in Gor, necessitate a lot of work IF you are going to do it right.  A Scribe should read and write; a physician should practice Gorean medicine and hone their craft and Warriors should defend and protect the citizens of their Home.

Go big or go home.  Give it something other than a passing glance and you might just enjoy your role play and character.

@Liara:  Thank you.  I could not agree more!  I have a blast while role playing my character in the infirmary, however, it is not appropriate to just call for a physician for non-emergency situations.  Make an appointment for exams and the like so that we can prepare for the role play.  Oh, and PLEASE try not to dictate treatment.  I am currently having to produce children to fulfill my required two child minimum PRIOR to taking the PCoG exam.  So, my role play has had to focus on character relationship development for a while ... so I can produce said children!  I could have taken the exam two months ago.  But I CHOOSE to do this so that I can "play my part".  Cut me some slack and IM me or send an IC note or something to let me know you need assistance.  I am MORE than happy to participate.  I just have a lot going on right now.

Little side note:  I had birthed twins in my previous back story.  No fun in that!  When I first came to Gor, I was new and had ZERO idea of how to develop Shyla as a member of the Green Caste.  So, I took the easy route and just wrote the kids into a story line.  Mid way through, I changed my plan (and story) to allow for a more realistic process -for lack of a better word- and now I inch my way closer to completing the circle I began drawing months ago.

And, oh!  What a ride it has been!   Wink
