Now for my perspective as a slaver and someone doing the Gor slaver thing for more years than I care to admit:

A Gorean slave is *never* insulted, ridiculed, beaten-down emotionally under 99.999% of her life. If she screws-up, sure she might be disciplined or worse: punished or worse: destroyed. But a slave is useless if she is damaged in any way, including emotionally.

Here is a theme you will see from me time and again because I cannot say it enough: there is a massive difference between domination and domineering.

This too sets off something in my core.  I think it is a common misconception that in order to be dominant one must be a physically abusive jackhole who beats his slave unconscious for the slightest perceived transgression.  I look at men and women who act this way with utter disdain. 

There are two ways to keep a woman in your collar I have found.  One is the former, with the whip.  The other is with the heart.  When a girl leaps up to serve you, when she tries her hardest, when a mere look from you can make her quiver, when you don't have to lift a finger nor abuse her to know she is doing your bidding then you know you have the latter.  It is like winning a war without a single arrow being shot.  It is the true meaning of dominance.  The former is nothing more than a mixture of fear and abuse, and only results in slaves coming to a bad place like Persis described in her OP.
