I have always wondered if releasing a slave is in the books and how it works on Gor, since a lot of slaves do get released? And if so, what happens after the release... ?

I have always wondered if releasing a slave is in the books and how it works on Gor, since a lot of slaves do get released? And if so, what happens after the release... ?

The most notable example of this is Talena who was the daughter of an Ubar before being enslaved and later regained her freedom and became the Ubara of Ar and of course Tarl himself was enslaved then freed.  There are also other examples of slaves being freed to companion their owner.

I could recall that once, it now seemed long ago, this girl, in a marvelously staged sale, with all the skills of the great auction house, the Curulean, in Ar, had, with two other girls, Virginia Kent and Phyllis Robertson, brought fifteen hundred gold pieces. Virginia Kent had become the free companion of the warrior, Relius of Ar. Ho-Sorl, another warrior of Ar, had obtained Phyllis Robertson. I expected he still kept her in collar and silk, liking her that way. (Hunters of Gor)

Thanks, but what if she is not released to be a companion, but just released?
Reason I ask if of this quote:

The slave cannot free herself. She can be freed only by an owner. The condition of slavery does not require the collar, or the brand, or an anklet, bracelet or ring, or any such overt sign of bondage. Such things, as symbolic as they are, as profoundly meaningful as they are, and as useful as they are for marking properties, identifying masters, and such, are not necessary to slavery. They are, in effect, though their affixing can legally effect imbondment, ultimately, in themselves, tokens of bondage, and are not to be confused with the reality itself. The uncollared slave is not then a free woman but only a slave who is not then in a collar.

So even a slave not in a collar.. in Gor is a slave?

In the example of Talena she was not released to companion but simply freed.  The quote you provided just indicates collars were not necessary even if a custom for a slave.  Even being branded was only "recommended" by the merchant caste for the sale of a slave.  Many free women were never sold but chain luck might have no brand at all.

Ven has a saying that he utters a lot of late "Women are women regardless of legal status."

The mention the freeing of several slaves in the books, often to be companions to their former owners.  It is not mentioned if there are any legal documents or if simply the will of the owner is enough to change that, personally I would lean towards the latter.  I also think a former slave would be more prone to falling to the collar however if not companioned to a man or protected in a man's house that choose to maintain her freedom.

As for branding, cannot recall the quote, but if I recall correctly a girl sold publicly would require being branded before the transaction could be completed per the merchant laws, however private sales had no such requirements.  Plus I figure if a customer did not want it done for variety of reasons I am sure extra coin or two could have the Slaver ignore certain laws, gold is Ubar.

What if the slave is freed, not be be a companion, does she go from owner to owner?

Actually papers of manumission are entirely BTB and would allow a slave to function as a free woman (or man) of Gor with all of the same rights although they would need to pursue acceptance to caste.  For those women who were formerly free women this is not as big of an issue as it would be for a barbarian slave.

“Do not call me ‘Master’,” I said.
“Master?” he asked.
“The papers are papers of manumission,” I said. “I am no
longer your master. You no longer have a master.”
“Manumission?” he asked.
“You are free,” I told him.
(Players of Gor)

A girl with pierced ears is, of course, either a slave or a former slave. If she is a former slave, her papers of manumission had best be in perfect order. More than one freed woman, because of pierced ears, has found herself again on the block, again reduced by strong men to the helpless state of bondage.

Yes, that I understand, but what if the slave does not go to a different owner, and the Master, just frees her.Does that excist at all on Gor?
From what I been taught and heard, freed slaves are seen as FW, upon release.
For me a uncollared slave is still a slave just not with a collar.I am not sure if that is Gor or not.

Not saying that manumission papers are not valid, but still the will of whatever man that comes along to accept them.  Ven as a warrior that claims to be illiterate waving a scroll in his face might not do much to protect ones condition.

For the sake of simple RP though as I see it, freed slave becomes a free woman and gains all those rights and protections.  She likely be looked down upon by those that knew her previous condition, despised looks from women, and knowing suggestive looks from men.

Some examples...

"I took from my tunic the key my father had given me, the key to Sana's collar. I reached to the lock behind her neck, inserted the key and turned it, springing open the mechanism. I jerked the collar away from her throat and threw it and the key from the tarn's back and watched them fly downward in a long, graceful parabola.", [John Norman, Tarnsman of Gor [Gor Series Book 1]]

"He removed from her throat the slave collar."
"“No,” she said. “Please, no!” She looked at him, suddenly afraid. “No!” she cried. “Keep me! Keep me!”"
"“Would you consent,” asked Relius, “to be the companion of a Warrior?”", [John Norman, Assassin of Gor [Gor Series Book 5]]

"“Write on the papers,” said I, “that on this first day of the restoration of Marlenus of Ar, the slave Vella was by her master, Tarl of Ko-ro-ba, granted her freedom.”", [John Norman, Assassin of Gor [Gor Series Book 5]]

There are many examples of the owners freeing their slaves without written document. Lady Florence released Jason and this was accepted without question.  Of course, Jason was a man.  He also was never branded, though he was sold twice, though neither of these sales were conducted at public auctions.

There was a young female released by the nomads too without manumission papers.  And she went back to Turia to rebuild her father's business.

It doesn't appear to be a regulation; but if I were a female slave who wanted to ensure there was no question about my free woman legal status, I'd want the formal paperwork.  LOL

Well one reason to not get the papers is the amazing story you could have being without them and even going as far as to corrupt some gullible scribe into providing you with fake papers.   Cool

She pursues a way to feed herself with work ie establishing caste.  The only time a person would be asked for papers to prove they were free would be when there is some action or appearance to hint at being a slave.

That is a good point. I have always be wondering whether in small villages or lonesome farms somewhere in the country, with only a couple of houses, whether it was registered somewhere: A is a slave, B is a free woman ... especially when slaves need no collar or branding by all means and when free women not necessarily need documents. ... well i have never read the books  considering this aspect...
