Ok random question.  Do you think Goreans had wet nurses?  Did they hand over their babies to other women to breast feed? 

For some reason I think possibly some high caste women might, but I have no reason why I think that.  Would the wet nurses be lowers class free women?  Or would they use slaves, breeding slaves I guess could be used for this.

Somehow I don't see a highcaste man or woman give his child to a slave for that .... but I might be mistaken

Well, if I think of the Gorean mindset about women, family and all that.  I highly doubt that slaves would be wet nurses, perhaps nannies to change diapers, bathing, etc (Ven's slaves often got that duty over the years).  I think of the pride Goreans have in family and one of the main purposes of free women in Gor is to procreate.  I do not think many of them would care about the stretch marks and such as that would allude to a slaves vanity over her body, dangerous thinking for a woman.

Also, think of a burly warrior finding out that his companion, the one he chose to give him children, is letting his son feed of an animals tit.  Sure sucking on a slaves breast is fine when he is of age to properly use a slave, but to nurse....might take exception to that.  Barring extreme circumstances of course, and not the "freed my slave to get a kid and enslaved her after birth" crap.

I can see the line of thinking you guys are going with, and could very well be right.

Ancient Greeks had slaves as wet nurses though, as I think perhaps also some Romans.
Slaves were used as wet nurses in the United States until the civil war.

I know Gor is none of those things, and finding a slave who is capable of nursing might be an issue unless was a breeding slave, so it could have gone either way.

I can also see a peasant woman or low caste being employed for this as well.

Aye .... I agree with Ven .... using slaves to assist the free women with handling the child , i.e. bringing the child to sleep , maybe sing to it , change diapers , help the mother take care of it .

But nursing a free born child ? A high caste child ? I doubt they would let a slave do such .
Ven is right .... if I found my companion giving my son to a slave to nurse while she could to it herself ... that would be reason enough for me to punish her .

And Ven is right about the family part .... and also about the part of calling slaves animals ... I find myself seeing slaves sometimes like cute little pets . I realized that today .
Sometimes they are annoying bishes .... but Kylar can also take a liking in em He is a weird guy .
But despite that I'd never let one of em nurse my son or daughter ... while my companion is alive and able to do so herself


The thing is Linx .... greek and romans also had slaves teach their childs . They employed them as teachers and often those slaves were respected for their wisdom . That is a diffrent thing ... and JN displayed Gor as a plac were most slaves are worth a few coppers .... less than a cup of good wine .
So I doubt they would do it .... might be wrong .

I agree on the peasant and low caste women as possibility of wet nurses .... though I believe a FW would do it herself

The more I think on it, there must be something.

Even for the cases where the birth mother isn't capable, or perhaps if she died.

I suppose they could give them animal milk, but for some reason I could picture them hiring out a peasant woman whose had 12 kids or something.

The amazing boobs are hard to miss. 

Ven is fond of slaves himself, and not just for screwing, and has no issue with slaves playing with his children, tending them and all that.  However, for the educating and nurturing aspects (nursing etc) that is the realm of his companion period, except caste codes and such which he has taught his sons.  Now being pragmatic if companion was unable to produce milk and such, yeah smart man considers alternatives but would first consider other women of the Scarlet that were nursing (not all high caste are wealthy), then women of other castes, and if a desperate situation might consider a slave.

If there is a quote around this topic I am guessing going to be in either Mercenaries or Renegades, but both those books occur in extreme conditions of refugees and the effects of a grand war.

Yesterday in camp I was commenting on a new slave's gravity defying boobage.  I meant to type it in open chat but accidentally typed it in Linnet's IM box.   

I said something like "wow those are amazing boobs". I'm just glad Triad wasn't on.
