As the festive season gets underway and the inevitable controversies unfold, Lady McMasters, from the Isle of Farnacium, talks to the Voice of Gor, about the Gorean Poetry awards.


-    Lady McMasters:   "The Gorean Poetry Awards is ambitious and different.  It's an open contest sponsored by the Gor Quiz Nite.  Up to thousands of people reside in Gor, and one of the staple diets of a Gorean was to listen to the Singers and the Poets.  The Poems are all judged anonymously. So you'll have someone who's written a poem for the first time and also people who been writing poetry all their Gorean lives, and the judges will not know.."

-    "What seems invidious about prizes is that choosing a winner excludes others.  I mean, I love listening to poetry, but I'm not an expert.  One assumes that one is plugged into a sort of gold standard of what's good, but then you discover other people have diametrically opposed views.  I am secretly hoping that we discover the best Gorean poet who comes through and who is not just extraordinary or adventurous but that everyone can agree is pretty good".


If you would like to take part in the Gorean Poetry Awards you will need to get your quills out sharpish.  The Deadline is this Friday!  But who knows, you might be the one winning the prize this year.

An incredible 35 people showed their support for the Gorean Poetry Awards on Sunday 27th November 2011 on the Isle of Farnacium.    People travelled from all over Gor, over plains, barrens and open thassa to come to gather to celebrate great works of poetry and song.  Here are samples from the Awards, cleaned and edited for maximum reading pleasure.

[10:08]  Xaz Elephas begins to read the poem as he speaks softly, yet with a deep voice filled with the compassion he had for his caste, his life experiences and allowing a brief time to see what he saw, what he felt all this years as he roamed his beloved Gor as an Assassin as he gazed out upon those gathered to hear his words…

"The Assassin by Xaz Elephas"

“From the shell of what I was, comes the Assassin I have become.
I rise to stand in the shadows of lost memory.
The ground moves beneath me.
Above me the stars call down their abandonment as I walk through the city of my prey.

Bold adventurers. Men at arms. Craftsmen and Women of Grace.
I listen to the rise and fall of their chests as they breathe in the sweet air of their lives.
I stand apart; in a sin of darkness looking down upon their faces.
Who marks time when time has no meaning?
Who finds wealth in the undoing of life?
Who faces terror with the eyes of a child?

The throbbing of their hearts becomes more than I can bear.
I flee the city to find comfort in the forests and hills that surround it.
Here I sit without regret; without remorse.
The dead surround me.
And together we rest.

I find myself under the great Pines on a forested hillside.
Under the bright three moons that mocks my existence.
I find myself standing face to face with brigands whose eyes betray their terror.
I kiss the Gypsy’s lips.
Take my fill of her with my sword and
Leave bones where none before existed.

I am both the terror of my existence and
The product of my undoing.
Killer to the spiteful moons.
Lord to a Spectral Court.
Lover to the hunger, I lay willingly in the arms of fate.

Standing on the docks of commerce I watch the traders disembark.
I catch the scent of foreign lands where the gold is rich and pure.
Tonight I shall board this ship, sail beyond this town of desperate lovers
Place my foot upon a distant shore and taste the richness of those souls.

For mine is the art of the Assassin
The flash of steel upon living flesh.
And the finding of needful things.

I press myself against the darkness as I walk the streets unhindered.
There is peacefulness here.
An order not found in forest.
These citizens live a calm existence and accept what fate I have planed for them.

I am the Assassin that awaits them in the shadow of their cities.
I can smell their cherry blossoms.
I can taste their food.
I can smell the ocean that surrounds them.

Gold. Rich and pure sustains me.
The night sings of it.
I pass the homes of artisans, poets, warriors and Administrators.
I writhe in delight as I feed on the fear of any I find.
None is exempt.

The woods and hills echo with the howls of Kurr that sense my disdain.
The night wears on into the blue curse of dawn.
I take my kill and leave this city through the Shimmering Gate.
There are other lands to see.
Cities of wealth and power.
Gold of Ubars and Ubara’s.
And I am open to them all. "

 in front of that warm fire there.

 Gather the children about your feet
 tell them you have a surprising treat
 you will tell them of battles long ago
 of giants and warriors that you know
 for old man with whitened hair
 oar and man, my voice now bare
 of you these great waters
 will aways be aware, and feel
 your soulful stare

Soon I return from the waters blue
 new tales of battle true,
 of longboats with gold a strew
 old man with whitened hair
 these great waters of you
 will always be
 aware...

"Such A Thing I Wrote by twilightorchid Resident"

Such a sight I saw.

Such a sight I saw when the collar was thrust before me,
Slave steel burning in the sun like Thassa, alight in the dawn,
The clouded gold holding such a threat, a portent, a promise,
Gleaming letters spelled out more than just a name.

    Such a sight I saw.

Such a scent I smelled.

Such a scent I smelled of the oiled hinge open and anticipating,
Hungry to close forever around my throat and seal me a beast,
The aroma of passion filled me, unheeding of my desire,
Like the cravings of a wild sleen, it roared through my mind,

    Such a scent I smelled.

Such a noise I heard.

Such a noise I heard as the clicking of the six pinned lock,
Each one a harmony, reciting the letters to a certain word,
Each metallic kiss a hammer blow against my heart,
Forever echoing in my bosom, my self, my spirit, my soul,

    Such a noise I heard.

Such a taste I tasted.

Such a taste I tasted when my tongue caressed my ruby lip,
The awe was bitter blackwine, the apprehensions like salt,
The feast of fear was to great for all the eating,
Rancid ashes and yet moreish, I became a glutton,

    Such a taste I tasted.

Such a touch I felt.

Such a touch I felt when icy metal took me,
Held me fast - It was wearing me, not I wearing it,
The encircling steel not only binding my neck,
the studded, hardened instrument caging my soul,

    Such a touch i FEEL.
