There are no quotes that I am aware of that say a free women could not wear her hair down however hair is considered to be a "sensuous" thing when worn down. It would be common to wear your hair up-swept or covered as a free women. To wear it otherwise would mean dealing with the consequences such as additional attention from men very much like going unveiled.

Upswept hairdos are usually reserved for free women, or high slaves. They are a mark of status. To be sure, one of the reasons for permitting a hairdo of that sort to a slave is the master’s pleasure in undoing it, in loosening it, thus reminding even the high slave that in his arms, ultimately, she, the high slave, is yet a slave, and as much or more than the lowest girl in the most remote village. The loosening of a woman’s hair on Gor in an extremely sensuous, meaningful act. “Who loosens her hair?” is a way of asking, in effect, who owns her. (Dancer of Gor)

Quote from: Nomads of Gor
He did not permit her, of course, to
bind or dress her hair; it must be worn loose; that alone,
naturally, was sufficient to mark her slave among the
wagons.

It forbids our slaves to have binded hair. But it also states that loose hair marks her as a slave, so no loose hair at free woman of the Plains. What women in cities do is not of my concern, they are the natural preys of our men anyway.

I would but its extra prims. LOL.

On the subject of hair, as Aphrys said the ways in which hair is worn by free and slave alike seem to be regional and cultural. I know my character keeps hers long and down to hide some fairly unsightly scars on her face and neck, despite being free now. My character is a peasant farmer however, and no one really pays attention to her anyway.

"...her hair was worn high, wrapped about a comb, matching the brooches, of the horn of kailiauk; the fact that her hair was worn dressed indicated that she stood in companionship;" - Marauders of Gor

We see here that companioned Torvie women wore their hair "high, wrapped about a comb" but we don't know if that meant all of it was worn in a holyroller bun, or if it was wrapped around it once with the rest allowed to cascade to the shoulders.  Single women wore braids or a snood.

Because of being a scribe, I almost always wear my hair up.  Sometimes I'll wear an updo with a few pieces hanging free but otherwise, that hair is bunned, braided and otherwise pinned up and tight.

But its also because I play a rather uptight character.  If I played a "looser" FW, I might wear my hair down.

I think part of the hair up or down has to do with how men view long hair.  Down and long and flowing is enticing to men.  Up in a bun or covered in a hood is not enticing.

In the meat market that is SL Gor, we see the women with uncovered faces and loose hair (usually saying, but we're low caste!) in order to attract that potential mate.  To get that RP partner we must display that sexuality that is so prevalent in Gor or *gasp*  we might wind up being ALONE!  So hair comes down in a sultry swoop of tousled curls, brushing just over the eye to give that "sex kitten" look.  The veil comes off to show off that Belleza skin.  The neckline drops to show off the awesome shape of the boobs.  The coquettish AO goes on with the bendover pose all in the butterfly dance to get that man!

The problem is, it works.  We dont see the men escorting women home who are dressed inappropriately.  We dont see the women mocking the other women who have their hair loose and long.  We dont see this because its "boring" to be escorted home if you cannot put on a veil or wear your hair in a less tantalizing fashion or wear a modesty top.  Usually when a woman is escorted home for these behaviours, she behaves like a "cap" and sulks in her room and complains in group chat until people finally say... FINE go RP.  And forget the reason WHY this woman was sent home.  She'd rather create a drama bomb rather than pin that hair up, cover those boobs, and cover the face.  Even low caste I see wearing veils.  They might not be the heavy brocaded veils of the high caste but hell put a napkin over your face.

I've really stopped trying to legislate hair fashion much less how much boobage shows or how much face shows.  It always ends in some drama fest with a quote from somewhere saying that a FW wore her hair down.

Oh and Razor.... I think that comb look probably resembles a french twist of earth.  Its a rather nice updo I think.  I have several of them.  Tukinowaguma (or however you spell that hair place) has an awesome french twist with color change gems that go down the length of the twist.  Quite stunning if you ask me.

This is so true and i have stopped it longer ago to even to try to rp such. It has simply no worth at SL-Gor and is just a Sisyphean task, never ending .. constantly repeating. The bad thing is, that all the women of gor obviously expect only the men to deal with such. Thats sad as we can't do it alone.
