PFFFT!  I dont DO begging!

But Marcus does make a good point.  He claims he's an Assassin.  Just like someone claiming they're a slave, they're a slaver, they're a pot maker, they're a warrior, they're an Initiate (I'll really pick on initiates here because of the sheer lack of initiate RPers in SL, I swear when one crops up every sim will race to recruit them).

Someone has an initiate character.  Say that character was developed back in HTML Gor.  They went through rigorous vetting processes of their OOC knowlege of the books, about their role, about what it is to be initiate.  They've RPed as an initiate for a long time.  They see SL, they see the large gorean community.  They say, HEY! this looks like fun!  This looks like I can RP here.  And the noob is born.  They find someone to mentor them on clothes, prim adjustment, hair, skins... they make a good looking initiate.  They now go searching the grid for truth justice and the gorean way.  They find a sim, HEY! Its an initiate!  We want you, we NEED you!  Here's a council position and everything.  We want to make you happy so you stay here as an initiate.

No vetting required.  They're taken at their word of RPing since HTML Gor's heyday.  Their RP speaks for itself.  And here's yet another individual who can be pretty danged influential on a sim, and now they're being offered OOC council positions as well just to stay on the sim!

Would the group "Really Cool Initiates of Gor" accept this person?  Nope.  Because that group doesnt exist.  Mostly because noone wants to play the role.  But what if someone were an "imposter initiate"  What if they werent truly an initiate.  Oh noes!  They didnt go through officially sanctioned initiate training school!  They dont have 5 signatures of their bestest initiate friends to say "yep this person is officially an initiate and they're a really cool person to boot!"  What if there was no sim owner tool of who is officially an initiate and who is fake?  People would actually have to...  le gasp... RP with that initiate to see for themselves if that initiate worked out.

Lists served their purpose.  They may still have a purpose, I dont see it, but they might have a purpose within those groups who want to train within respective castes.  They might have a purpose for saying "ok who's going to take NewbX under training"  They might have a purpose for NewbX to say "hey, I'm seeking knowlege and I need my Yoda"

thryri, you know me, with the exception of how many SL assassins who might have been elsewhere I was a MA way before most in another venue.

However I was told I needed to go learn SL before I could train. The kicker being I was told I needed to go do it elsewhere because the BCs were too busy to do it.

To be honest I could not do a damn thing on SL, how to change hair, how to do this, that and the other thing. What bothered me was that my experience in this caste was not put into consideration, and for the most part (with the exception of a few) is still not, but not being able to do things on SL was more important. If I can walk and do things well on SL I can thank NON Black Castes (such as Maria, who spent hours fixing my avi from typing like liberaci) and Lady Dove and her FC Draco (who in less than 4 days taught me all there was to know about inventory and all of that), and there is more but those are two examples.

Now I have seen rogue that were spoken to get the black livery almost no work asked, cause they were vouched for.

I come on SL to RP, and by that I don't mean being served in an Inn or being furred in my tent, but actual mind stimulating RP that leads to somewhere (besides being served in an Inn or furred in my tent). And the reason why I do listen to outside of the Caste people is two fold... first with the exception of three BCs if I am a BC on SL it's due to people outside the caste (Free and slaves) who deemed me worthy of their time to teach me the SL life and second because in the other venue where we both were the Caste of Assassins did not listen to the masses and more and more they were put to the side with the No Kill Zones and what not.

I am a firm believer that if you do not know history you are bound to repeat.

I am thinking about having a meeting about starting a meeting to set up a meeting to vote on whether or not to have a meeting in the first place.

I can read OOCly cause ICly I would not be able to, so fortunately this must be an OOC forum!

My point of view on this topic is simply this. Stop looking or speaking of "the list" let those that are true members of the black caste deal with fake Black Caste. I have seen it done, right within my own city. I role play with Blacks. I enjoy it. It can make some interesting role play. Builds good story lines, and hell it even helps if your in a jam.. you have a "friend" in a high place to contact. Trust me the Black Caste have eyes every where , and then know if there is a fake in their presence.

question for Maximus:

let's say i started a new character and said he's a merchant of Hochburg.  i went around cities, and even to Hochburg itself, claiming to be a merchant, peddling my wares, and stating that yes, I am from the Hochburg, and i have access to a supply of whatever it is that i'm selling that is unparalleled.  i have the best of that particular product, and i speak for that product's availability in the city of Hochburg.  i know my caste well, i know the product well, and i rp well enough that i work with my contacts and set up proper rp.

keep in mind i have yet to apply to your city, i have not spoken to you or any merchants or anything like that, and have no 'official' connection to your city.

someone from your city confronts me about it, and tells me since i am not a citizen i really can't do what i'm doing, and do not speak for Hochburg in any shape or form.

my response to this is "why not?  my backstory says that i am a merchant of Hochburg, i inherited a business from my parents dealing with this product.  i know what i'm doing, i'm a good rper, i've read the books, and i have thorough knowledge of my caste and business.  furthermore, Maximus can claim Hochburg is his city, but really he has about as much claim over that city as xaz and koh have over the black caste.  i have no reason to believe he has some control over all of Hochburg, I am of Hochburg of the books, which he has no right to, so he really can't tell me i'm not a citizen."

what would your response be?

Probably the responce would be that it is roleplay and fill your boots.  Cheesy    Really, it would be like not being able to rp a healer if you don't belong to the PCOG.  How is that any different?  OOC is just that....OOC.  IC is so much better.

I am not sure where this line of questioning comes from as I have placed no stipulations on anyone in regards to roleplay, but sure I will play your reindeer games.  Wink

This simplest answer to you question is nothing. My response would be nothing. If you wish to have Hochburg in your back story by all means feel free to do so. It's not my roleplay, it's yours. If you wish to RP being from Hochburg and having a store and wares in Hochburg that's your prerogative. Hell, if you want to come RP you are a citizen in Hochburg and never join the OOC group you are more than welcome.

Now in regards to one of my citizens saying you couldn't do that: firstly, that probably wouldn't happen. If you knew anything about my SIM you would know that it was built on the premise that people have the right to roleplay who and what they wish. They will recieve IC consequences for IC actions. Secondly, when a visitor comes to my SIM to look for your store and wares that you have told them about IC, it is not I who has to justify IC actions. Apparently they have come across a traveling insane merchant who has spoken false tails. What they do when they find you is up to them. Once again, not my roleplay, it is yours. OOCly I may direct them to the German Hochburg thinking that perhaps it may be there, but either way, not really any skin off my nuts.

I lay no claim to Hochburg the city or the name. If people want to build ten more Hochburgs by all means "git er done". I will have mine and I will continue to enjoy it as long as it can be enjoyed. But I will guarantee you one thing, I am not going to stand at the entrance with a list on a clipboard telling people they aren't cool enough to come in. I have much better things to do with my time than that.

Oh and BTW, we have no applications. A simple touch of a sign and you can join the group. I invite you to come check it out.  Grin

What is a "false BC" exactly, besides someone not on that list? I mean, you're all false BC unless you're killers in RL too.

The theory of the list is good. I use it to seek out the BCs that are training if a lad comes to the camp and we are not taking them. I tell the BC OOCly someone might or might not find them and I RP ICly with the avi that a Killer in a region (not giving the name of the sim but hints of where it might be ... one example: in the old scrolls (aka the books) this island had five villages, but now in this time (aka SL) it only has three) could be training, which then gives an out to said Killer, if they do not want to train the person, to say "I am full, I am not training" so on and so forth.

The usage is bad because some, not all, sims have turned it into a "guest list" of sorts to see if they wish to allow someone in or not. The problem here is that if they do not have that list said sims would just IM the BCs they know to ask "if they know this person". Same failure of lack of RP just in a different method.

There is an old saying/proverb "anything, good or bad, overused is always bad", this can be applied to the list.

Just my 2 cents.
